I've got 97 Explorer (5.0, 4-door) with 46,000miles. When rolling forward very slow I can hear a clicking noise coming from under the front of my truck. But as soon as the speed gets a little faster (over 5mph) the noise goes away. I've gotten outside of the truck while a friend sat inside and rolled the truck forward really slow and it sounded like it was coming from the transfercase in the front of the truck. The noise doesn't occure in reverse. What could this be? It can get pretty loud when I'm rolling through drive-through food places and you can hear the noise bouncing off of the building.

Clicking noise under hood

I have a similar problem. I recently started to hear a clicking sound under the hood, it sounds almost like papaer flapping in a fan. The noise is in the center towards the fron. Other than the noise, it is not behaving any differently than usual.

I can hear it while I am driving and while I am idle.

I notied no one had replied to this post yet, but if you have any suggestions, please email me princessnatty@msn.com. Thanks a MILLION!

Natalie, have you checked your oil level?? May be lifter tick. How many miles on your '94?

I am due for an oil change, and I have 121,000 KM.

Thanks for responding, I am taking it to my Dad tonight, so I wanted to have an idea of what it could be based on everyones experiences.

Addendum -- March 19 - 7:15 est. We had a look under the hood with the flashlight and the cooling fan was cracked to hell, it was pretty much ready to shatter. I won't be driving until I replace it tomorrow.

Addendum -- March 20 - 7:00 Low and behold it was the tensioner (You guys told me so! <-- GOOD WORK!) which I had fixed, and the cooling fan was slapping up onto it and becoming weaker and more cracked. Xena (her name) is repaired now and very happy.

Thanks again for all your help,

This is not the first time I have sought information on this site and found what I was looking for.
