Need some advice from you guys

Explorer#2 said:
i just love that i can go 10,000 miles and not have to worry about changeing my oil or filter, and since i am away at college this is a big thing for me. plus it cost less in the long run, since i use amsoil it is about $50-$60 for an oil change but i only do it once a year and i could pay about $18 four times a year.

You have a good attitude.

You only say that because he agrees with you.

I know that you are sure about what you know about oil and such, but I was already working in a lab where I had the ability to test for myself such oils before you were born. I've been using Amsoil and other "true" synthetics since 1976 with perfect results -- in many instances with long-term service intervals, sometimes using Amsoil's sampling program and sometimes without.

I have yet to explode an engine, or even have one go bad on me, and I drive my stuff into the HUNDREDS of thousands of miles. My current off-road-daily driver has 229,000 and last year I drove it to Moab, Panama City, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin (twice) and all over between. We live in Louisville, KY.

When I lived in Wisconsin, and was driving a built F150 (38's, 500HP 390, full time 4x4 w/lockers) I could barely move the truck off the spot on a nice -20 degree morning -- until -- that is -- I changed everything over to Amsoil. After that, it was just start up and drive away.

So -- here is the challenge to you... Change out the oil you are currently running for Amsoil. See if you get an improvement in both mileage and functionality. If not, just change back when you are done. But, of course, you won't because someone once told you something that you believe before those of us that are actually doing it -- and have been for decades.

Glfredrick, ot to be a jerk or anything but you guys who preach about Amsoil dont seem to understand that similar results are gained with good out of the bottle off the shelf full synthetics as well....

truth is the 4.0L and 5.0L engines should go 250K miles with regular interval oil changes, even with traditional oils, even longer with synthetics and possibly even longer with Amsoil and the like for sure. But it is not for everyone.
I personally need to be able to go pick up a quart of oil when I need it, and filter, for 3 or 4 vehicles. Ordering my oil through the mail just isnt going to work for me and I have no problem changing the oil every 3-5K miles.

Amsoil is a fantstic product, I don't think anyone is disputing that, but there are other synthetics available at AutoZone and Wal Mart that work well too.

This poor guy just asked for advice and look what happened! this discussion has been had on this forum for almost a decade now too!
Opinions are welcome, of course, but geeesh you guys info overload!!

Maybe if you extended your OCI you wouldn't need oil every monthor so. :)

If you want a product like Amsoil, for example, why not just stock up and have it on a shelf in your garage? I keep at least two cases and a a dozen oil filters on my shelf; ands I only use 2 quarts of oil a year and 2 filters.

I just can't justify wasting money by throwing perfectly good oil down the drain. But to each his own.

truth is Aldive the interval changes. I am pretty **** about the BII, but I dont freak out if it's been 5015 miles since the last change.
I shoot for 3500 or so but will change it after a long road trip, playing in the dirt or as soon as I can get to it.

I understand your concern about me wasting good oil, hahaha some of my friends joke: "Man didnt you jsut change that? Can I have your old oil?" etc...hahaha

I do recycle. 5 quarts of Castrol Syntec (full synth) is like $18 and Motocraft FL-1A is $3. I don't see $25 or so (taxes, etc) 4 times a year as a biggie. I have personally seen my own engines opened up after 200-250K miles, one of wich I know had Mobil synth it it since day one from the factory (94 Ex) and Motocraft filters. You could still see the factory hone marks in the cylinder walls, the lifters, pushrods, and rockers had little sign of wear, there was almost no sludge in the pan, etc. Compression was within 5% at each clyinder and at 190 psi if I remember right (remember 5280' elevation) This engine has now been shipped to Froader to use in his Explorer. Lets see if he can get another 200K out of that sucker.

It may be true, I may be changing my oil before its time, I also may be late with a few of my changes, but so far this method works well for me and my engines. I recylce the old stuff so throwing $$$$ away? I don't know about that my underdrive pullies :) hahaha just kidding.

I like Amsoil, have seen good things, but its just not for everyone and might be overkill for some.

Just curious:
How much is a case of Amsoil with filters shipped to your door?
How many oil changes will a case do?

I am an Amsoil dealer and my price is not retail; I do not want to publish dealer price. That would not be considerate to other dealers.

A case is 12 quarts; do the math ( depends on your capacity ). My system uses 6 1/2 quarts.

well when 5 quarts of Mobile One Synth went from under $20 to $28 I switched to the Castrol Syntec for the first time in 10 years.

OK boys, before everyone blows a gasket...the oil study and filter study have already been done here and posted. A little searching found these two gems... The first one is a study on GJarrett's truck using synthetic oil and having it sent out for evaluation every 5k miles. http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11225
The second one is information on filters..

Dead Link Removed

Enjoy....

you've probably touched on this before in another thread but for Glfredrick, aldive, do you think that someone like 410Fortune and myself who have been using Mobile1 fluids and filter (or the equivalent full synthetic) since they got their car would notice a difference in switching to Amsoil?

I seriously doubt it; Mobil 1 oil is an excellent product.

I have used it through 3 sets of motors in the boat.

If you go back to my first post, you'll notice that I said that Amsoil was but one of the "true" synthetic oils that were good oils.

The debate got out of hand when one of the parties started bashing without knowing...

I run Mobil 1 in some of my stuff as well -- but I prefer Amsoil.

BTW, I've found that Amsoil is not only a mail-order item anymore. A couple of my local parts stores stock it on the shelf. Also, you can get dealer pricing for $10 a year and no inventory stocking. That is a good deal.

The gist of my argument is that a "true" synthetic oil is far superior to a dino oil in 99% of the cases that I've seen out there. The factories recognize this, and the top cars come stock with synthetic oil, including the diffs on our Explorers. Corvettes have used Mobil 1 as the factory standard oil for over a decade now...

Oh -- and if you check out the new versions of Mobil 1, you will see that they are rated for extended change intervals -- says so right on the bottle... :D

WOW, I didn't expect some people to get into a pissing contest :D . Since I am stationed in Germany, I will have to see if the local parts store has Mobile 1, but one thing that does suck, is they only carry Fram filters.

Thanks for the advice and when I get back to the states in June, I will try out the Amsoil.

Can't we all just get along :chug:
what exactly is wrong with fram filters. i never used one however. Can someone explain?
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Nothing that I know of. I've been using them or other el chepos with cheap dino oil for years with no problems getting 200,000+ miles from my vehicles. However I do faithfully change the oil and filter every 7500 miles.

OH there are a few topics on this and other forums that can get a little heated. :)
However you know at the end of the day I think we could all still sit around a camp fire and shoot the sh*% :)

Absolutely... :D Just some of us pushed a tad closer to the fire than others... :fire:

You guys will have to ignore my grumpiness... I just found out that I will likely loose my job in a couple of weeks and that means that life is about to suck -- again. Right now I should probably refrain from any Internet debate, as I'm likely to bring a nuke to a ball game to win.

^^That sucks, sorry to hear that.
