If my neutral safety switch went out. would it not let my truck start when when in park or neutral?

the only way i can start my truck right now is to touch the two terminals together on the starter relay

Ive replaced the ignition switch, starter realy, negative battery cable i dont know what else to do

Does it crank? I need more details. I would think that if you bypass the relay and it work....The relay would be at fault.Maybe I am overlooking something..... I dunno.

For some reason I have this urge to do a voltage drop test on your battery cable but I need more info first....

nope, I turn the key, all the accecesories come on and I go to start it and the relay clicks but the starter doesnt engage.

I can pop the hood and touch the two relay post together with a screwdriver and it starts.

Ryan

First off, what is your battery voltage at?

havent checked that what should it be at

Ryan

with no surface charge, it should be at about 13.6 volts

and if it only starts when you jump the terminals, then you need to replace the switch in between those terminals!

What do you mean by surface charge? is that with the engine running or not running?

Jim what switch would that be and where is it located?

If you are talking about the ignition switch on the steering collumn, I have already replaced that

Ryan

He is talking about the "relay" you baypassed with the screwdriver.

I agree. But I tought you said you replaced it already?

Engine off you should have at least 12.6 volts. (battery is 6 2.1v cells linked in series)

oops... 12.6v is what i meant... i dont know whee i came up with 13.6v?

After you charge a battery....Before you test its voltage you turn on the lights or somthing similar to drop the surface charge.......

yes I have replaced the relay. twice actually thinking i might have recieved a bad one. The most recent replacement would be last sunday

Could my battery cause these symptoms (if it is bad that is)

if my battery was bad would it still all me to be jumping the relay like i am already doing?

Also would it be causing my starter to randomly engage while the engine is runnig

Thanks for everything soo far you guys, I have absolutly no clue when it comes to eletrical stuff.

A bad battery or bad/corroded connections will cause a no crank condition. Battery voltage is always the first thing checked.

Can you please rephrase this?

If this is the case you would hear a very nasty noise. The one you hear when someone tries to turn on a car that is already running.

Ryan

You would think not.....

lets try this.....the little red wire with light blue stripe that runs to the starter relay (i believe it energizes the relay) how many volts sould that be sending when the key is in the start position.

Ryan

It depends on how you have you meter leads setup in the circuit.
Voltage drop test
tool required- voltmeter
Put your neg lead on the positve terminal of the battery. Put your Positive lead on the power in terminal of your relay or at the end of your battery cable. When you turn the key from on to run you should see all 12.6 volts drop to zero.
