2000 Ford Explorer Lim.
My dads 05’ town and country with the 3.8 was wrecked and so I recommended him to buy an Explorer and I was looking for an Explorer with a 5.0 AWD but settled on a 2000 Explorer Limited 4.0 SOHC/AUTO 4x4 with 181k on the clock for $1,000. Needed a brake line and that has been replaced already and brakes have been bleed but light is still on, trying to figure out what is causing it to still be on, possibly brake fluid got on the sensor to the master cylinder. Was off when topped off but came on when we test drove it on the way back to my dads friend shop before buying it because that’s where we met up at, no other lights on the dash which is good. Only thing is that the motor somewhat surges but not throwing a code so possible gasket/seal is bad somewhere, plan to do smoke test to find it. Has a lifter tick I believe but not worried about that. AC was recharged but air/coolant was leaking out from the back of the AC compressor so we used JB weld and after it dried up we recharged it again and that did the trick. Radio face doesn’t light up so one day I’ll get another one from the junkyard. RPMs are inaccurate most of the time but I’m not going to let that bother me lol, I do like to see the rpms though. Had trouble with it staying it park and slop in shifter but a new steering shift tube solved that. Has slight quiet rattle from the timing chains or the cassettes but not major. Steering rack needs to be replaced but that will be done another time down the road as well as the tie rods. Shocks are worn so those need replacing too, cool thing about this truck it has air ride but annoying when you have a lot in the back and it wants to keep leveling out. Has minimal rust for the most part and still has original muffler on it. Also had new alternator and tensioner when we got it, the fan clutch is bad I believe because the fan is constantly from startup to shutting it off. Another small problem I remember is that the outside temp above by the sun roof controls is out but that’s a common thing with these Explorers. Also had new wires put on and were told the plugs were changed. Oil and filter was changed and dipstick was replaced at one point. Tires have even wear and I believe was a one owner before it was donated then sold at auction then we bought it off the guy that sold it to us. I thought I share and post here since I still have my account here and my grandparents had one new since 99’ but was wrecked 2 years ago so this truck has some sentimental value to me a bit. Funny part is the same day we bought it some guy bought the 95’ Mustang we had later on that night so that helped a bit to cover fixing cost and labor. I hope we don’t run into any more problems down the road and let me know what you guys think about it.

Not to bad not to bad at all

You can have lots of fun with that look in my signature below

Nice ride!

If it’s the red BRAKE light, it is either low fluid or the parking brake circuit. So if your level is good, check the micro switch on the park brake.

Surging idle often caused by a hose on the intake manifold (PCV maybe?) getting old and soft. The heat softens it more, and it collapses under vacuum—and the engine surges. Check those hoses.

Hoses seemed fine but will look them over again in case and I’ll look through the forums about the parking brake circuit. Thanks for the tips

Would you know the location of it by any chance, didn’t find a lot in the forums. Like I mentioned the brake light lit up on the way back from the test drive since the brake line was bad and ran low after getting back to the shop. So do you still think the parking brake circuit/switch is the culprit?
