OK Big Dawgs: New bumper D-rings or Shackles

I'm getting a bumper made and I read somewhere that some trails don't allow d-rings, is this true. Also what's everyone else got? And whar are the disadvantaes/advantages to both of them. Thanks.

Please guys. I want to order this bumper and this is the only thing holding me up.

I would say go with Shackles...

Reason being is that you can undo the shackles and put a tow strap on and re-attach it to the bumper. If you had D-rings, you would still need a shackle to attach the tow strap.

so go with these:

I second the shackles. Go with 3/4" or bigger shackle. It will say 3/4 on the shackle itself. I get them in town for $9 ea. w/ tax. I also like the look of shackles on a bumper way better than d-rings.

Brian,
If you like Shackle, then wait till you see what I have in store for my Explorer! Hehehehe

Chris, looking forward to seeing some pics of whatever your doing! I have built 2 bumpers with shackles in the past 4 months but not for an Explorer. Another thing is with shackle mounts you can also bolt them to the frame so even if the weld fails, the bolt will still be there to hold on unlike the d-rings which need to be just welded in most cases.

7/8" Shackles hanging off of 3/4" thick x 3" high Steel plates that are bolted to the frame, and protrude thru a notch in the Stock Bumper.

now you can't just bolt a plate to the rear bumper and hope it holds, cause it will not! The 3/4" plate will be bolted to the Frame by 2 Grade 8 1/2" bolts. If you have any questions just ask!

Thanks for the feed back guys. I'm going with shackles!

Anybody know a good place to buy shackles on line? I don't have any tractor supply stores in my area. And none of the car parts stores have them either.

http://www.masterpull.com/ has stuff and cool winch ropes.

is it easy to install a steel front or rear bumper? Id guess 2 could it. To heavy to install alone. Still considering one but dont wanna pay to get it installed.

go with shackles..... that's at least what I ordered on mine!! :)

I got my shackles at Grainger. I don't know if they have a website, though.
