Okay, I v'e got the new long block, what do you guys suggest for lubrication? I've seen alot on this site about synthetics and I'm most likely leaning that way, however I'd planned on putting in Slick 50. Does using synthetics eleminate the need for oil additives such as Slick 50? I've never paid any attention to synthetic oils, do they come in the same weights as conventional oil?Living in the south, what would be the optimum weight? As youv'e guessed, I no nothing about oil. Any help would be greatfully appreciated!

Just use synthetic and that's it. Use Mobil 1 or Amsoil, and you will be all set.

very important- DO NOT USE SYNTHETIC UNTIL THE ENGINE IS THROUGH THE BREAK-IN PERIOD.

many times synthetic oil will not allow an engine to break in. run generic dyno oil first, then switch to synthetic. i have allways ran Mobil 1 synthetic in all of my vehicles. there will be no need for the Slick 50 or any other additive.

Thanks, is conventional oil considered "dyno" oil, if not would it suffice?

Has anyone ever used Royal Purple?

Addatives are a waste of money.

Use a quality synthetic after the break in James described.

yes, "dyno" is just an internet name for convetional oil.

i know alot of racers who use Royal Purple and it seems to be good stuff.

Thank you much, last question.

I'm assuming 1000 miles is adequate for "break in", am I mistaken?

The shop that installed my rebuilt engine said 20-30K before switcheing to synthetic. I've heard so many confilicting opinions on this. One thing I would do, If your engine has a warranty on it, talk to them. Hate to invalidate a warranty by putting the synthetic in too soon (according to the warrantor).

corvettes come with Mobil 1 from the factory, along with other high performance/high price tag cars.

Ask any of the Amsoil Experts

And they will all tell you the Break IN period is a load of Crap it is a myth just like the you gotta change it gradually Crap. Just do it and do it from the beginning. I would. Teflon is for pipes not something you want gumming up your engine so Slick 50 is a NO NO on new engines. Put Amsoil in today. think of it this way. That stuff virtually eliminates wear. Now 40, 50k from now, do you want an as close to new engine as possible, or one with 5 or 10k dyno dammage on it?

If anyones interested, I found this article on the web.
http://www.aera.org/consumer/breakin.htm and I talked with the rebuilder and he pretty much agreed with James, yet he told me to just go to 500 miles and change my oil at 500 to keep my warranty....

i have heard that the Vette, Viper, and most other exotics usually come "dyno broke". i have no evidence to support this other than i read it in a magazine somewere. :)

a myth? thats odd, because it can be proven with a quality micrometer.

Vettes and Vipers definatelu come with synthetic from the factory. There are other high end units that do too.

Don't use Slick 50 unless you want to rebuild your engine within a year. That stuff is horrible just stick with conventional oil during the break in period. I'm running all conventional oils and haven't had a problem yet, knock on wood. :hammer:

Oh ****, better flush that crap out of my wifes windstar!
I thought I was doing good putting the "high mileage" version in.....
