For the last couple of years, my Explorer has had dubious handling at higher speeds. It would need constant correcting from side winds and felt very skitish.
I've just put some mono tube KYB shocks on the front. Normal driving around town, it feels a bit firmer.
I've just done 150 miles down mostly fast dual carriage ways [ 80- 85mph] and I must say there is a noticable difference. Side winds hardly shift it off line at all and all bumps are better controlled and I feel confident in how it handles again.
So if yours is feeling a bit loose on the front end, think about changing your shocks.

hi Kevin

Having just driven 1400miles up and down the country I know what you mean about side winds! Where did you get the shocks from?

I got them from rockauto [usa].
Uk ebayers do say they have the Kayaba [kyb] mono shock. To cut along story short, none of them actually hold the stock. You buy off them thinking they have stock, but they then get them from Kayaba uk. They all say they have more than 10 in stock when they don't.
Kayaba uk only had one in stock and didn't expect any more.
I had to have a refund from one of the ebayers and all the others said they had a stock error. Useless.
You can get the twin tube Kayaba quite easily but I wanted an upgrade.
I did look at Monroe, but heard bad reports, and I couldn't afford Koni or spax.
Look on you tube for kayaba shocks. They make a good impression.

Following the advice on here purchased the Kyb Gas-A-Just monoshocks from rockauto and likewise really impressed with how much more solid the ex feels on the road. Judging by how lumpy and squidgy the old Motorcraft shocks felt (I'm guessing they were the originals), not surprising really!

thx

Cheers for the tip. I had a set of Monroes in my basket but upgraded to the KYB's. It only increased the total price by £6 too for some reason
