'94 XLT
Hey everyone! I'm new to Explorers, and found this site through The Ranger Station while looking for engine swap info.

I just snagged up a '94 from my mom, who's had it since '98. It's a 4 door XLT with the 4.0. Truck has 398k miles on it, and the second trans just went out a few months ago. It has a clean body, and the interior just needs a good steam cleaning. I'm looking to throw in a 5.0 that I have laying around, and swapping out for a better trans of some sort. It'll wind up with a mild lift and some 33" tires, just for a more aggrassive look.

Looks like a lot of good info here. I'll be looking forward to learning all about these trucks. I always liked it in stock form, now it's time for fun!

I'm also an avid Ford guy. I'm a big Mustang fan, and currently also own an '88 Turbo Coupe that's near mint. The Explorer is a truck to use as a daily driver and to tow my bike trailer, so I can race my ZX-6R.

what is the 5.0L out of?
is the 94 a 4x4?

Welcome :)

Engine is out of a '90 Stang LX 5.0
Truck is 4x4. Is there a way to swap it to a manual tcase?

What transmission? hahaha

Alot of things are possible, especially with a 5.0L to start, the transfer case selection will begin with your transmission, or vise versa.

I have a trans from a later model Explorer 4x4 5.0. Will that fit up ok? I believe the donor truck the trans came from was a '96 or '97. It was a rollover victim and my buddy bought for the engine.

thats a 4r70w automatic.
You will need a Baumman engineering stand alone controller in order to sue that trans with your Stang EEC-IV engine.
$$$$$

In order to use the BW1354 transfer case from the explorer you will have to use an adapter from AA $$$$$, take the 4r70w apart and install an output shaft, more $$$$

Or you can bolt up a full size Ford T case, electric shift

Or you can run a AA adapter to a Dana 20 t case and not need the output shaft, but still need to rebuild the t case and buy an adapter $$$$

There is alot of information on this site for using that trans with different T cases :)
I have this transmission and a Bw1354 Explorer t case, details are in my signature...
I also used the 97 Explorer GT-40 5.0L engine and stock PCM to control my trans however (EEC-V), Your Mustang engine is different (distributor)
The 4r70W trans is a late generation AOD-E as far as the case is concerened

Would there be any benefit to going with an older AOD trans? I'm probably going to carb the engine for now, and do an EFI swap later on. It'll wind up as a 306 by the time that is done.
