Ok, I have a 95 explorer. It has a dealer installed push button under the dash that you have to push at the same time you turn the key to start it. I have no buttons on the door. A few weeks ago, the push button fell apart and I couldn't get it to snap together properly, so as a quick fix, I just taped the button in the "in" position. Now my remote will not lock or unlock the doors. Can I bypass this button, or can I just replace it with another push button? It is a pita to push it all the time, but I need my remote to work properly. Secondly, I hear these things...4.0's have power steering issues. I bought this 3 months ago, and the guys said PS had a squeal. I never heard it, but now it's hard to turn sometimes, and it never returns back to center without me turning the wheel back. Is there a way to test the rack to see it that is the problem? Any ideas will be a great help. Thanks

Check lower ball joints for your power steering issue. For the love of god get rid of that POS button.

Power steering rack could be the "return to center" problem, but my money is on the wheel alignment, especially the caster setting. FWIW my 96 doesn't always return to center either, but it drives straight, and does not adversly wear the tires.

My guess is that the push button is installed to bypass a faulty portion of the ignition switch, or it is a bypass for a faulty security system. It could even be some crazy defeat for the PATs system. Not really something we could tell you what it is without seeing it and seeing what it is wired into. Also, I doubt that was a dealer installed feature, dealers tend not to do that kind of redneckery.... Dealers generally tend to opt for ACTUAL security systems.
