Hi everyone, 1998 explorer sport manual 6cyl SOHC(me thinks) owner here. I bought this explorer about 6 months ago for $2500. Since I've owned it there have been a few problems I've encountered. I blame it on the fact that I can't help but poke around try to understand things I don't know about. ie Learn something and then learn that its broken. The guy I bought it from told me the sprayer motors were blown and he had been wiping his windows with snow all winter. It was a fuse. There was a slight studder in the engine and a kind of put put at the tail pipe. This guy had been running on only 5 cylinders for only god knows how long. The spark plugs were ford motor craft and rusted to high heavens. Few years old at least. Next thing was the tranny stopped wanting to go into gear for me. Drained the hydraulic fluid and about 2 nickle size drops of pure black fluid came out. I really dont know how I was shifting at all. After replacing the fluid and bleeding the lines untill my leg was about to fall off it shifted great for about a week. At this point I'm convinced the slave cylinder needs to be replaced but in my experience once a slave cylinder goes you can't shift at all. I ended up replacing the master clylinder and it shifted great for about 1 month. I drained the tranny fluid and replaced it with fresh. The fluid was looking like oil and about a quart low. There wasnt too many shavings on the magnetic plug. That bought me only a day of smooth shifting. So now tomorrow I'm going to pull the tranny out and see whats going on in there. I've ordered a new clutch and slave cylinder and if need be im going to purchase a rebuilt transmission or rebuild it myself.

i've been looking at this one http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=011&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&viewitem=&item=320252073063&rd=1

Any suggestgions?

After I get over this tranny issue I'll be crying about my suspension next...
..and then my engine... and then.. and then... :)

Welcome to this forum! I hope that the cost of rebuilding everything is worth it. It looks like the cost of the repairs might be as much as you paid for the whole vehicle by the time you are finished.

welcome aboard

Because no one here ever puts too much money into their trucks! :p:

I'm impressed at everything you've done so far Trilaphis. You'll fit in nicely here. Your truck, a 2nd Gen Sport with a manual and SOHC, is quite a find and you'll definitely be envyed for having it.

Is this your DD or just a fun second vehicle? You mentioned suspension. Are you going to go higher, drop her or just stay stock? Since you have a Sport that the previous owner didn't maintain, you likely have mono-leafs. Check out the threads about going to 4-door leaf packs. It will be a big improvement and it will get rid of that rear end sag.

This is currently my DD. I just got in from trying to remove the cross over with no luck. the 3 nuts on the cat were so rusted I had chisled 2 of them off and the third one, the hardest one to get at, will NOT come off. Theres only half of it left and I don't have a cutting torch or grinder so I'm sol. I was thinking of driving down to the local garage and having them take out the cross over and put it back on so when I go to drop the tranny that part will be a breeze.

Yes, I have mono leafs and a nice sloppy ride. I'm thinking of just replacing the leafs and shocks. I'm not sure how much money the trans job is going to suck up. So, at this point I think a lift kit or anything like that is out.

As far as the SOHC I'm not entirely sure if it is or not. For some reason I thought that it was but my father was just looking at it and doesn't think so. Is there some way to tell?
