So my aunt bought my uncle a new SUV and he's willing to practically let me "have" his 1996 Explorer Limited for $500.00 It has 96K miles and has minor cosmetic flaws such as some interior parts that can use some TLC (Headliner, driver's seat, etc.). The body is in excellent condition with almost no paint fade and dings/dents. As far as the trim, he tells me it's the fully loaded model that has trip computer, air-ride assist, 4x4, etc. I think it's the OHV V6 as well. Is there anything I should know of the bat before I start driving it everywhere? it's my third Explorer/Mounty I've ever owned, but I have zero experience with 4x4's or pre-99s for that matter. I just want to make sure it runs well, and be aware of all maintenance that should be promiment for these around 100K so I can go ahead and do it ahead of time. Thanks to all!

chances are the trans filter has never been changed, with the history of transmission problems with these cars id service the tranny first of and perhaps engine oil and fuel also depending on when your uncle last did that, buy the factory blue cover service manual pertinent to your model year,, 96 k miles is low for these vehicles,, knowing which engine u have is important, , it will say on the top of the injector, manifold cover also on the epa decal on the rad support,

Thanks for the info. I have a Haynes manual at the house that I use to work on my Mounty. I believe it covers all engines I will look again! Looking forward to the pickup.

I have a question. I looked up a VIN and it says that this car as an SOHC V6. I thought these motors were not available until 1999? Can someone chime in? Thank you!

97 was the introduction of the SOHC. Either you looked wrong, the engine was swapped, or the truck is a 1997 if it does have a SOHC. What does it say on the intake?
