96 4x4 xlt
hey new to the scene i have a 96 4x4 xlt just took out on the trails for the first time and im pretty happy with how she preforms (compared to a 86 cherokee 2x4 i had when i first got my licence)haha.
anyway when in 4x4 auto is the transfercase supposed to clunk as its puttin/removin power from the front wheels?i didnt like the sound thought id ask?
also i have done the tt in the front and gettin aal in the rear.
im not sure how much lift im gettin from the tt, at stock my rearend sits at 20" from center of hub to edge of wheel well and my front sits 21" ,( or 33" ground to edge of wheel well and my fronts 34")thats with stock 235/75. dose the explorer sit a little higher in the back stock? could someone whos done the tt maybe even measure form center of hub to edge of wheel well for me so i can compare? (i have no way to tell what stock height it was at stock ,i had my torsion bolts removed 2 years ago to lower the truck(my mistake)). also i have my drivers side torsion bolt cranked all the way in. i expected to be 2" higher than the rear, am i right?

also im still unsure what tire size to use with the 2" tt and aal 32x11.5 or can i get away with 33x10.5 i dont really care if it rubs but i want full stearing range, and the largest tire possiable (want as much ground clearence as possiable)even some input of what tire sizes you were able to get away with after 2" tt an aal.

and one more thing anyone have any suggestions on the tires to buy they gonna see mud, mud/rock, sand, and some gravel but mostly mud/rock and sand (some of the mud sticky) and i need pretty good tread wear most of my offroadin will be done 2-3 hours away at my cottage.
oh and this is a semi dd just in winter, summer its more a toy

thanks for any help or input, cant wait to have some fun

well welcome to the forum first of all, there are all types of great threads to help in any process you wanna do and most can be found by using the right search words. as for the stock ride hieght, when i measured mine before i did my TT in the front i believe it was at 34" from the ground to the top middle of the wheel well, and for the rear i believe she sat at 33". but like i said i did the TT, and made my own shackles for the rear. over all i gained about an inch in the front which brought her to 35" and with the shackles i made i gained 2" in the rear to bring her level. as for the tires, i have done quite a bit of searching on here and have found that i can get away with 32's without cuttin anything. hope this will help bud, BTW what part of Canada ya hail from ?? NS here

Welcome to the largest resource for the Ford Explorer on the web.

I just put 32x11.50's BFG A/Ts on my X a few months ago. I believe it's the largest size you can go without an external lift kit (i.e. body or suspension). I did have to remove the corner trim piece from the front quarter panels because they rubbed bad. I haven't trimmed the plastic pieces in the front wheel wells, because they only rub once in while under medium to max flex (sharp turns while braking and the occasional pot hole ...PA roads are full of 'em). The rear tires cleared with plenty of room left over.

If you need a reference for lifts vs. max tire sizes check out this thread.

thanks for the replies
bogfather , ive been doing some searches still cant find much but from what ive read that 34" is one inch higher than stock,35 or 35.5 is best u gonna get, also ive read that my maxed out t-bolt it a common problem and i should buy longer torsion bolt,
(or get new torsion bars from a v8 grade 1
the idea of longer bolts just seems wrong but i might just go that route depending on $$
from cambridge ont

lil98sport4x4, are u saying u clearing 32x11.50 stock heigth?
i have also checked out that chart and im understanding 33x10.5 will fit in place of 32x11.50 am i readin this right?if so i think id sacrafice the 1 inch in footprint for the extra inch in hight (might help the diff clear some rocks), i dont wanna trim the fender unless its inner fender or minor triming

Well, not stock height. I'm clearing 32x11.50's with a 2" TT and shackles. If you do 32's, you may have some occasional rubbing on the inside of the front fender wells without a body or suspension lift.

oh alright well im going to look at tires to day i think im gonna go with a set of bfg mud-terrain t/a km.

oh and u think 32x10.5 or 11.5 would be better

oh and one more q i dont have the back raised yet u think the 32x10.5 will fit till i get aal? ps.,im not driving her yet not till the end of month, so if they fit at rear stock height an rub its not a concern ill only be driving back from the tireshop to my home then to a spring shop to have her raised

My friend has a set of 33" BFG mud terrains on his Jeep for 3 years now, and he's been very happy with 'em.

I prefer to have more tire on the road, which is why I went with the 11.50's. As far as which is better...it's your truck, so if you can, put a couple different sized tires next to your X to see which you like better. When it comes to your X, the only opinion that really matters is yours :)

I'm by no means an expert on tires and wheels for X's, so I'm not sure if a 32x10.50 will fit at stock height. Maybe someone else here might have a better idea. Personally, to be sure, I'd lift your truck up (do the TT and AAL or shackles first) and then get your tires/wheels.

Good luck...

yeah i figure ill take the extra inch in width ill be seeing sand on my explorations might help me to say on the surface anyway im gonna go with a set of 32x11.50 goodyear wrangler mtr $991.80 installed balanced can$.
just gotta talk to a local spring shop an set a date for aal.
and hopefully have it all done in two weeks (tires are on sale for a short time (an is that a good deal for those tires ? i have no idea?))
thank for the help
