New transmission install question. Reset adaptive memory??

So I'm installing a new 5R55E transmission in my 99 Explorer sport 4.0 OHV I ordered from Drivetrain products. Their instructions say to reset the adaptive memory with a capable scan tool. First question, is this necessary? 2nd.) what sort of scan tool would I need to do that? I have a OBDII scan tool but only can scan the codes, not manipulate anything else. Thanks!

I wonder if this would be necessary after just doing the solenoid pack on an existing 5r55e. Just recently did this and all my gears are shifting alright but a little more harshly than they should, gas mileage hasn't been great either. I figured having the battery disconnected for a week or so while the car was being worked on would do it. I may have just not driven it enough yet.
