New transmission or rebuild?

Ok so I have a 96 explorer xlt 5.0 awd, it has about 240,000 miles on it. It's not running bad now but with the off-roading and crap I put it through I'm worried it'll go out. Would a new transmission or a rebuild be a good idea? Also which is a better option? Thanks

these are pretty bullet proof trans and as long as the fluid is clean and it doesnt leak i would think your okay.. but it sounds like you beat it up pretty good so if your on a budget you could pull one from a junkyard that has had an easier life. (most junkyards rack how many miles were on the tranny) and get a low miles one. or there is a lengthy rebuild guide here on the forum with pics and everything. i would do the junkyard one. i gotta trans with 80k miles on it for 200 bucks with my core. paid a shop 400 to install it..
