I'm new here. I'm looking at a 1999 explorer xlt with a SOHC V6,auto and 94,000 miles. While I was test driving it the transmission started to slip while going uphill. I shifted down to 1st, then shifted to 2nd and it slipped. How hard is it to change the transmission? Can a do it yourselfer do it? Is there anything else I should know about the transmission? Thank you

you are looking into buying one with a slipping tranny or already bought it?

yes it can be done but it sucks for the people that have to do it with jacks and jack stands!!!! the tranny is pretty heavy but it can be done just have to be real carefull

if u can get a hold of a lift and a tranny jack then it would be 10 times easier!!!!!:):):):):):):):)

Before you think about eplacing the tranny read the 5R55E Valve Body Rebuild Diary (at the top in the stickies section). I doubt this tranny needs a rebuild.

I'm thinking of buying it. Are there any other mods that need to be done to the tranny other than the valve body?

If you have to rebuild or replace the tranny, I would look elsewhere for an explorer. 99 explorers in my area sell for around $5-$6 so they arent expensive...and thats with 60-80k miles.

I can get it for 4 grand. Explorers around here are $6000 or better for ones that have over a 100,000 miles. I just thought if the trans problem is common why not buy it, then at least I know the transmission is not going to fail.
