Hello, I own a 91' Xplorer XLT 4.0 V6.

My trans went and my truck has about 75k miles on it. It runs alright.

Once in a while the engine will smoke, but it doesnt have a over heating problem...I think its oil leaking onto the engine and burning.

But my question is, Should I bother getting a new transmission...or jus get a new truck/car? Cause my truck is only worth about 3k and I hear a new tranny is about 1k not installed.

If I get a new transmission..what kind? I hear the stock one I had blows, so I dont really want to get another one of those.

Thanks in advance.

Mike

Thank you all

it's up to you man. Do you want to hang onto your truck? Do you have a lot of time and money (mods) invested in it? Do you have the money to get another vehicle?

ok well lets say i decide to get a new trans, what kind should i get? i dont know anything about them.

You can't really get anything other than stock without spending more money. But a ford remanufactured one has a 3 year warranty and will last probably longer than the 75K of your first one. You may want to look into why that one only lasted 75K also, such as fluid changes, cooling, driving habits etc.

mreverything, you get on aim a lot? I wanna ask you something

yea, my name is Im DiSfiguRed...i used to go on mrevrything

You better think about $1500

or so unless you can do it yourself...or do yourself a favor - sell it and buy something else.

It all depends....

Yes, it all depends on whether you want to hold on to the truck or not. I have a '92 Eddie Bauer that I bought last October from this guy who moved to Texas. Of course he didn't tell me everything about the truck so I found out the hard way.

rebuilt engine put in January, replaced front/back brakes, front rotors, new ball joints, muffler, had some radiator work done and NOW I just had the trans rebuilt - my mechanic informed me that the trans was rebuilt once before and I never knew it. I have now a 12,000 - 12 month warranty - just got the truck back today with the rebuilt trans. (he had it for 3 1/2 weeks!)

I'm practically restoring this truck so I'm going to keep it for another year at least - no car payments or high insurance costs (NJ) for a while for me.

So, it all depends on what you want to get out of the truck, if you plan on keeping it for a while, get the trans rebuilt.
