Happy New Year and good riddance to 2024!

I'm glad to be here to learn more about my Explorer, and to share my experience.... So here's what I've been dealing with for the past 5 or so months... We recently bought a 96 explorer XLT from a guy on marketplace... Since I was out of town my wife was the one who saw the deal through... When I got home I came home to a project that has kept most of my attention if not all my attention. Needless to say we payed way too much for a vehicle that would be better suited for a ranch or demolition derby and not for the daily driver we need. From the top, there's no way to tell the mileage due to the wiring to the odometer being ripped out, but judging by the sludge and build up from the oil , at least 180,000 or more. It came with no ac or heat due to many missing lines and parts, the front windows don't roll down using the buttons, the interior looks like a serial killer might have been the previous owner, the clear coat has flaked off so bad and paint is fading, the suspension needed to be totally updated, and the tires are dry rotted. I can keep going.... Sigh, slowly but surely I've been trying to make lemonade out of this gigantic lemon but it just keeps getting more and more sour by the day. So just the other day, I started her and heard the a rod or lifted knocking... Knowing I should have just left her alone I decided to drive home, and on that drive home the Explorer jumped time, and decided to not be driven any further... Now instead of throwing parts at her and spending hours chasing my tail, I'm just going to put another engine in. I've been researching and I've found a lot of awesome information here. I know I'm a newbie and just joined but I do have good plans for my beloved exploder that I've already started resuscitation on. My local junk yard is currently having a holiday sale and they have plenty of explorers and rangers to pick from... as the project progresses i will keep this thread updated for y'all.... Hope everyone has a blessed day and a wonderful new year!

Welcome to the , um, club. Sometimes it seems like self punishment, but, usually it's worth it in the end.
Which engine do you have? V6 or V8?

Welcome.

In 96 only pushrod engines available

Interesting that you say it jumped time
That would usually be the sohc engine which was not available till 97

So which engine do you have? 180k miles on a 96 we still consider “low miles” hahahahahaha well kinda… depends on how it was cared for

Welcome to Ef! Thanks for sharing
2025
Must be better! Can’t go much worse!!!
