2001 explorer sport 4x4
I recently got rid of my 96 Explorer sport and got a newer( way less miles ) 2001 sport. The tires on my new truck are nitrogen filled and I'm not liking the way the tires feel at speed over bumps.. too chattery??? feelings?? advice? concerns??? thanx all !

I had my replacement tires filled with nitrogen this past summer. Haven't noticed a bit of difference in ride or anything else. Nitrogen doesnt expand/contract as much with temperature changes so you wont have to add/remove pressure. I was told by the tire salesman (hmm, the one I paid for the nitrogen charge) that the nitrogen will make the tires last longer. I'm guessing more due to the temerature stability of the gas holding the correct pressure under all conditions than anything else.

The nitrogen is not going to affect the ride at all. If things feel funny, check the pressure. If they are over or under-inflated, you'll notice a huge difference in how they feel.

The ride has nothing to do with the nitrogen in your tires.
Make sure they are set to the correct pressure.

the make of the tires and the load rating of the tires makes the biggest difference in ride next to correct inflation.

what about the " make " of the tires?? I have the goodyear wrangler RTS all season radials?which came on the vehicle.. and i dont like them.IMO

I run the Goodyear Wranglers also, and yes they are a bit on the harsh side.

Chances are your old Sport had a tired suspension
and your new Sport has a much tighter suspension since you say it has low miles.
Even with 130k miles my Sport rides much tighter/harsher than my
buddies 97 XLT which has the same miles .
I like the ride myself, I would not want a mushy riding truck.

lol, well different tire manufactures manufacture tires to last for different lengths of time, like coopers or pretty much anything else won't last as long as a Michelin.. therefore the reasoning for that is that the rubber is harder on the higher mileage tires creating a louder ride in most causes.

Also, highway tires will always be quieter than AT's.. I was told by a tire shop that the higher the weight rating, the rougher and louder the ride will be. Explorer's come stock with the P rating and the next step up is the LT, which i have and they are a little louder then i think they should be.

I guess that has more to do with the noise than the make, but different manufactures do make different quality tires with different comfort levels....
