no 4x4

i have a 1998 x with a auto,4hi and 4 lo tcase...the lights come on but no 4x4...the 4lo hardly ever works.any ideas on what it could be?

I'd have a look in the Transfer case/transmission/etc forum, there is a diagnosis thread in there that was helpful to me when I had 4wd issues. The cluch in my transfer case was the culprit, so I just swapped it (the whole transfer case) out for a new one.

i just swaped this case in.my other case only worked in 4lo

The encoder motor could be sticking. Sometimes a good wrap on it with a mallet will engage it.
