The other day out of the no where my tranny went haywire. It started when i came to a 4-way stop heading to my uncles house. I came to the full stop and then acclerated as normal. Well 2 seconds after my acceleration (which i kinda have a heavy foot) the tranny made a popping noise and acted like it was in neutral (just revved when throttle was applied.) So i pulled over on the side of the road and proceeded to get my profanity and arm waving out of the way so i could figure out what i was going to do next.

So i tried reverse to see if it worked, and it did. Next, i put it back in 'D' just to see if it would work and no such luck. Next just for S*&%'s and giggles i put it in '1' and same result. So i tried '2' and it worked! So i made it back to my uncles house and checked to tranny fluid and it was fine. When i left there to go home i just put it in '2' to start off with the then put it in 'D' to get through the rest of the gears. So my obvious conclusion is that 1st gear doesnt work but the rest of the gears seem fine.

Has anyone had this kind of problem before or know what it may be or much it would be to fix. Thanks in advance.

well since we know it works in other gears, we know we have adequate line pressure... so the pump etc is ok. The fact it moves froward ok in 2nd and 3rd and 4th means the forward clutch is ok. So if we look at what component is actuated only in OD 1st, D 1st and manual 1st, we should know what's bad. Unfortunately that is the rear one way clutch (rear sprag). In my opinion that's broke. If so, it's rebuild time. Sorry. It is a known weak point. EVERY rebuild IMHO needs a new rear sprag and new race if it is to be reliable.

Thanks for the response Glacier. I just am getting out of the Honda family and do not know the 1st thing about a manual tranny. I can rip and motor in and out of a honda, but if you ask me to do something with a Ford or Chevy im clueless. Thanks again. Does anyone else have any imput?

Also my Explorer has only 59,x.. miles on it. It is a '98 but is there anyway possible for this to still be under some kind of drivetrain warranty?
