Hi All
I am a newbie and cannot believe some of the incredible threads I have read here like the rebuild diaries. Great stuff. I am hoping that some one out there can give me a simple (cheep) fix for what could be a dying tranny. I really don't want to junk my truck but I don't have a place to work on it and The shops want too much to rebuild it.
I have a 91XLT with 137 K on it and it runs great except the TCC lockup stoped working. It still shifts fine and the fluid looks good. It was intermittent at first working when cold and 10 miles down the road it would stop locking up. Now it just won't lock up at all.
I appreciate any Advise I can get.
Thanks

I'm going to guess that either your TC solenoid has given up the ghost, or you have a spool sticking in the VB... of course it is possible that your problem is IN the TC as well, but lets exhaust all the "non removal" avenues first. Go read the A4LD VB rebuild Diary with focus on the TC aspects of it.

Thanks for the reply Glacier
Two questions.
1. Can I remove and replace the Soleinoid while the tranny is in the truck?
2. I am curious as to what could go wrong with a Torque converter which would cause this kind of a problem.

Welcome to this forum! Could you please describe the symptoms as to what you are experiencing when your torque converter won't lock up? Sometimes it could be a sensor, like a tps, or a vss that is malfunctioning, and not necessarily a part on the transmission. You would have to remove the valve body to replace the solenoid. Did you check your solenoid's coil resistance? Was the pan removed? Sometimes the internal wiring harness on the transmission could be bad. Check this link for some information: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1388264#post1388264

Symtoms

Hi
The symtoms of the TCC not locking up were at first it would run fine then at 70 MPH the TCC would unlock and I would increase to 26-2700 RPM from 2200. Now it just stays at around 2700 at 70.

Check Solenoid

Could you point me to a thread that could tell me how to check the Solenoid? I haven't done anything yet just trying to figure out my options as I can't afford the $2000 the tranny shops want to charge. :p

Try the A4LD Valve Body Rebuild Diary in the Sticky threads at the top of this forum.

A newbie here. This thread is as close as I could get to my question/problem.

I have a 99 Explorer Sport with 111K miles. My transmission shifts fine but after about 10-15 seconds if the TC does not lockup, the O/D OFF lights starts blinking a a steady rate (1/sec) and it will not lockup again until I recycle the ignition. The weird part about it is that I know it's coming so if I play with the throttle just right, I can get it to lockup. It also locks up on its own on a new ignition recycle if I accelerate at a moderate, steady rate and there is no torque demand, e.g. I'm not going uphill. I've check the error codes, key on engine off & on, but nothing comes up since I never get a MIL light. I've read several other threads and some suggest the valve body, solenoid, tps, vss, etc., but if any of those were bad, wouldn't it not lockup at all ever? Should I just start replacing items?

Thanx for listening. Any suggestions would be appreciated
