So, I believe the noise is coming from the flywheel cover area. My '02 4.6 had this noise from day one, as well as many other Exps I've seen. It's hard to describe but it kind of sounds like rushing fluid when accelerating....and it kind of cuts in and out as you build speed.

When under the truck I was able to more-or-less locate where it was coming from. Perhaps it the cover touching the flywheel?

Anyone know the noise I'm speaking of and what causes it?

Torque converter is the noise, pretty much on all 4.6L.

;)
Torque converter is the noise, pretty much on all 4.6L.

mine had it at 50k when bought it has 130k now still same sound. got an flowmaster exhaust to not hear it so much!

My converter makes heaps of noise when it is cold, but the noise seems to go away when it warms up.

Ah, I see. Thanks all!

It is likely the torque converter. My '02 XLT 4.6L sounds like rocks are in the transmission but it doesn't hurt reliability or function of the transmission. It is common with '02 Explorer/Mountaineers. If it is the torque converter, the noise should go away completely when overdrive locks at 45+ mph.
