Im possibly going to trade in my 05 Freestar for a 2003-2005 Explorer. Im looking for a V8 powered one with 3rd row seating. My question is do all XLT's come with the 3rd row or is it an option. Also will this tow a car trailer with a 3200 pound Police Mustang on it? Im looking for something I can tow this mustang to and from shows with .Is the V8 in this model year any good? I know they went to the 3 valve per cylinder in 06 but I can not swing the 06 price with my backwards trade..thanks!

3rd row seating is optional on the XLT... I know at least for the '05 model year, and I'd assume that the other years are the same.
IIRC, with the Towing package, you can pull like 4400 pounds (someone correct me if I'm wrong, please), so you can manage it with the towing package.
As for the V8... can't comment there: I've got the V6.

The 3rd row seat is an option, but a VERY common one. In fact, when my Mom bought her '03, the dealership said lots of people DIDN'T want the 3rd row seat, so they were rebating the upcharge on Explorers that had it so they could move the cars out. And when I bought my used '03, I had to look for an Ex that didn't have it. Plenty of under-floor storage without it!
I have the v8 and the towing package too. No complaints about the engine. I haven't towed anything yet so I can't comment on that.

My 2002 xlt with 3rd row is rated to tow 5500 with the tow package and 373 gears and v6 engine so u should be able to tow atleast that amount, someone please correct me if i'm wrong.

According to this guide, the 4x4 with the 3.73 is rated at 7,000 lbs and the 4x2 is at 7,140. That's enough for a small to medium enclosed car hauler if you want.
