'91 Explorer 4x4
A week or so ago I mentioned my "new" 1991 Explorer 4x4 manual xmsn was making a noise from both the throw-out bearing and the transmission. That started 15 miles after picking it up. My first action was to check the trans oil. I decided to drain and change it. My research indicated it takes Mercon, and I drained what looked like 80w. The fluid also appeared to have metal dust in it. Installing the proper fluid made no difference.

Since it's been sitting around, waiting for the Holidays to be behind us, I decided to start her up and drive around the block, noise and all. I got to the bottom of the hill, and it wouldn't go into any gear, with or without the motor running. Letting the clutch out doesn't have any effect. I don't want to really force it, and I don't think it would move anyway.

Tomorrow I'll call AAA and get it towed back to my house.

Any ideas?

Signed,

Husband in the dog house :(

well if you have metal shavings in the tranny fluid and now it is not going into gear, i would expect the transmission. I had this happen to me almost the same thing you are talking about, and I had to have a new trannsmission put in. it was expensive, but well worth it!
