- 1999 XLS 4x4 OHV
Hello,
I have a 1999 Explorer XLS with 4.0 OHV 4x4. The O/D off light recently was sporadically flashing. When I turned the truck off, it would stop and I would go but then while driving it would eventually turn back on sometimes.
Now, while driving to work, it was sort of ok, but when I got up to 40mph the truck rpm thingy would surge up to 4 or 5rpm and then hard shift down finally. If I took my foot off the gas a little it would either kick the O/D off light on or allow it to shift and be ok. So after a while, it just kept the O/D off light on and wouldn't shift down. When I got to work, the truck was smoking, but I had to go into work so I left it. In the morning when I went to leave, when I put the truck into reverse, it wouldn't go so I pushed it back and it did go forward when I needed to drive. So almost all the way home, it seemed like it was stuck in a high rpm revving state while driving and wouldn't really go past 25 to 30 mph. About a 1/2 hr into driving, I started pushing on the gas a little more and it was still in a high revving state but I got up to 40mph. After about an hour of driving it seemed like it stopped being in that revved up state and came down to where it should be when I used to drive regularly. So by then I was able to get up to 60mph with no problems. If I had to stop, when starting off, it would rev up around 30mph and then go down and I could drive regularly and go at a good speed with the truck not acting up. When I got home, I was able to go in reverse with a little hesitation but it did go.
So, I took it to the transmission shop to get the codes read and it said something about the 3rd and 4th gear. The transmission guy said I have no 3rd and 4th gear and said I need my transmission replaced. He said with me not having reverse, no 3rd & 4th gear and my O/D light flashing. I would just like some feedback from everyone. It seems like once the truck warms up or something I am able to go in reverse and how long do you think I can drive it like this? Like I said once I get past the 30mph revved up state, the truck drives like it used to. Please help because I am clueless. If I do have to put a new transmission in it, what is the difference in taking out and putting in a transmission with 4x4 compared to a transmission without because my brother would be doing it. Thank you in advance everyone for your help and feedback. I tried to give as much information as I could.
