Just flushed the cooling system of my 98 4.0L sohc, and was going to use pink OAT antifreeze - but then read this:

http://www.fcsdchemicalsandlubricants.com/main/quickref/scucEN.pdf

under Usage Notes it says

" All pre-1999 vehicles...... must be serviced with the green-colored engine coolant"

There are plenty of warnings on the net about not mixing different types of antifreeze, but I have flushed thoroughly, so that does not apply.

So... is there some real reason why the new OAT type antifreeze can't be used in the 4.0L sohc, and if so what do you think I should use?

I did find this warning about "classic cars"

Thanks for the reply

Winter before last we had three weeks of -15C to -20C.

Not much better this summer.;)

Ford are selling a "universal" antifreeze:
Ford Super Plus Premium Antifreeze
Ford Specification: WSS-M97B44-D
Ford Part Number: 1336808
Fits all ford cars 10 year long life

The more I read the more confused I get.

Whoa, now thats cold! For temperatures that low you want to buy something that contains almost 100% ETHYLENE GLYCOL and mix it 50/50 with water. Then you will be ok from -37C to +132C. The brand I ended up getting was "Nulon Long Life" an Australian brand as the selection is fairly limited over here. It was about $30 for 5 litres and lasts 4 years. It conforms to the ford specs.

So I rang the local Ford agent - they had no idea, and told me to ring the largest agent in the area....and they had no idea either, but I should be careful as the wrong kind might damage the seals or head gasket! They suggested i ring an American car specialist to see what they use.
What happens if someone brings an Explorer in to them for a service God knows.

Please someone from the UK, please tell me if there is a problem using more modern antifreeze in the SOHC V6 or not, and if there is, then which UK available antifreeze should I use.

After doing some research on the matter of OAT I would advise that in our cars you do not use it. It is known to attack silicone and lead. These are used in the head gasket and in the radiator. To be safe ensure that the antifreeze used is labelled IAT and this is safe to use.

Thanks very much Howard :salute: - so the Ford parts guy at least got that bit right.
