Im looking to invest in a code scanner soon. I don't want to pay any more than $150. I've looked at iPhone apps that can do this but you always need a special cable. Any suggestions for a good scanner?

I am using this. It comes with the free software and you can also find many other type of software from the internet depending on what you want to do. It is $30 now and I paid $40 last year from Amazon.

Can I hug you? I've been poking around to find a decent one with usb but the ones i kept finding were for like specific cars

THis is the reason we come to the forum - getting help from othes! Cheers.

I use a cheap $30 one I got off ebay and it's been working great for 3 years now. Gives me live data logging, USB, monitors, codes w/description, etc.

I got this one because when I got it, it was an open box clearance and I paid a whopping $15 for it. It doesn't matter what one you use, they will ALL give you the code, which you can Google. Some just have some bonus features.

Don't only specific ones read and codes? That's one of the reasons ( among many others) that I need a scanner

There are normal codes which can be read by any readers. There are also specific codes from particular manufactures which needs special readers which cost couple hundres if not 10s of hundreds. Here we are taking about normal codes.

Exactly. With my reader, I am presently throwing a P0174 which can be read by any and all readers. A simple google search sends you over to here.

I just got the OTC 9450 from Amazon. In addition to OBD it also reads ABS and SRS codes. Worked fine on my 2005 Focus and 2007 Sport Trac.
