I have a '91 explorer sport and occasionally there will be a strong fuel smell coming through the vents. I am thinking of replacing the pressure regulator and the o rings on the injectors this weekend. Has anyone had this problem or have any suggestions? All help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks everyone!!

I had the same problem with my first gen Explorer. I replaced the evaporative emissions charcoal canister and that took care of it for me. I think that after, so long the charcoal just can't do it's job anymore and fumes come out of the boxes vent. On my '93 it's located on the drivers side wheel well.

As Rick suggested, I'd look into the EVAP system before the injectors. For the most part, it's just easier to get to. On mine, the CANP (cannister purge) solenoid stopped opening, causing the cannister to fill with fumes.

I know this is an old thread, but I am having the same issue on my 94. Is the purge solenoid on the upper manifold? I looked at the canister and lines yesterday but not see the solenoid.

Thanks

Look at replacing the o'ring on the FPR first. It's cheap and easy.

It is. Right under the intake. 99.9% that's your problem.

The reason I asked about the canister purge is it doesn't smell like raw fuel, is smells just like the vapors the I have found coming out of the canister. That and fuel mileage should have been noticeable affected by a leak and I still get 18 MPG consistantly.

canister purge solenoid is my guess as well

Have seen this problem so many times on the 91-94 4.0L OHV
