Hey all,

I know that you're going to have some skipping on dry pavement when in 4x4, but my question is regarding a loud kind of 'whine' when turning my wheel in 4x4 mode. I don't know if its too big of a deal because it only seems to be happening in 4x4 mode, but is it normal to hear this sort of howl when turning sharply in four wheel drive or do i need to have it looked at?

I have had this for about a year and its approaching 100k miles and i haven't done routine 100k mile maintenance on it... would any of that help?

I'm sorry, I really don't know much about cars, so I would appreciate some dumbed-down advice.

For starts, is it in 4hi, or 4lo?

Either way, 4 wheel drive should never be used on dry pavement. If it is on softer ground it should not make that noise.

thanks for your reply

it is in 4 hi and i am pretty sure it has made the sound in snow when i turn very sharply. normally it is not an issue, it only happens with sharp turns.

so... no way this could be normal? should 4x4 ever make a sound at all (rather than just a vibration or skipping)?

Mine makes the noise you are describing, but only when on dry pavement. I cannot say for sure it is normal, but I believe it is.

Thanks. This alone makes me feel a little better. I'm a bit of a hypochondriac when it comes to my health and my stuff, so sometimes I make things up.

If anyone else has experience with this let me know.

Thanks
