Ford Closes Ohio Plant, Temporarily
Published: March 15, 2001
By: Matt Menard
Ford has temporarily shut the doors on it's casting plant in the suburb of Cleveland, Ohio after three of the plants workers were diagnosed with Legionnaire's disease. The plant was closed on Wednesday night for testing and disinfection while two of the workers remain in the hospital, the third
was treated and released.
Legionnaire's disease is an acute respiratory bacterial infection that effects and estimated 8,000 to 18,000 individuals, annually, in the United States. While most people will recover from the disease up to 30%, of those who contract it, will die. Those who get the disease experience high fever, chills, coughing and often pneumonia. About a week ago, a Ford employee died from pneumonia and officials at the Center for Disease Control are investigating that death to see if it was brought on by Legionnaire's.
Officials, from the Center for Disease Control, are at Ford's Ohio plant searching for a possible source of the bacteria. There has been no word as to when the plant will re-open.
