I have a 1999 Eddie Bauer 5.0

It's got an indicator that alerts when an oil change is needed.

Is this sensor set to indicate at the factory recommended change intervals, or is there actually a sensor that analyzes the oil and alerts when a change is needed?

I don't know of any vehicle that samples and analyzes oil. My wifes GM has the light, but it does a calculation for it using miles driven, average RPM, things like that. I don't trust it and change it every 5k regardless. It says in the book it can't account for operation in dusty conditions or severe duty use. I'd venture to guess yours is the same. I'm guessing that is in the message center console?

I personally change my oil every 3K regardless, but I do quite a bit of stop and go driving.

It's simply a reminder that goes off every 3000? 5000? miles, to remind you to change your oil.

Hold down the button on the right side, and it'll count down to reset it to 100% of whatever the mileage is, and annoy you when it gets down to 0 :)
