OK, I'm in the black--now what?

As for my brake issue-
Missing caliper bolt induced by my ovejzealousness to have a clean looking suspension-
I had soaked them in purple power for the duration of the project, and I think the fine threads were eched enough that they didn;t lock well. I replaced the bolts, and used lock washers-they seem to be holding. I don;t think it was a brake issue as much as an assembly issue-also the loose lug nuts I found were on the same wheel. I swear I triple checked evrything, but I must have been tired. I have to take the blame.

I do plan on upgrading to sport trac knuckles for a larger disc, this may help.

If I do only a converter swap, I think I may induce other issues, as the idle will be hard to hold. ( Sheri needs to drive it also)

WHile I was in the mountains I notices an sas'd 4.0 ohv which was running circles around me. Forgive me If I am wrong, but it seems a stock v8 would have plenty of power.

As for the body of our truck, no worries. It already has issues.

I am convinced the overheating is due to the torque converter stall speed.

......(whispers) Get an xtra cab 93-97 Ranger....

I have to agree with the rest of them. I think you need to keep your motor and get rid of the high stall and cam. It represents years of blood, sweat, and tears. And while you might want to get rid of it now I think you'll regret letting it go down the road.

Wow, I'm in about the same situation as you. I've always like off-roading, but never have been on any "serious" trails. A while back, I found some, which I've recently been exploring in my free time. That got me wanting to make my explorer more capable..and want to go more. Then, while you guys were out playing in CO:p:, I almost rolled my explorer. After that, I've wanted to build more, and hit harder trails, and learn more. And more. And do more. And more. And more, if I didn't mention that. I've had several friends go out there with me, and all are hooked now. I'm sure they will thank me once their pockets are lighter:D

Plus, like you, mine isn't the most effective. It's getting old, and worn out with high miles. I've decided to keep it around as a project, which is something I've been debating for a while. Now I'm looking at a 3000gt for a new DD to keep the miles off the explorer, and so when things go wrong with it, it's not a crisis situation. It's at a good price, so I figure I'll get it. The daily gas savings alone would make a decent modifying fund for me.

If I were you...I'd keep what you have now, and make it work. You'll appreciate the power of that engine, especially if you get bigger tires and whatnot. That is, unless you don't think it can be modified for "slow" I can't count how many times I've wished I had more power in mine.

I take it this means you won't be lowering it again?:D

Keep the Turdle.

Buy TDavis' trailer

Buy JDrapers sport

DONE:thumbsup::D

I'm down with that!!!!:D

And yes, my truck is fully road legal and drives pretty well on the freeway at 80 mph. It's already re-geared with 4.56's, on 33" tires, has a winch, rear locker, rock sliders, etc..... Ready to go and at only $2500 it's a steal....:D:D:D:D

...And you liked Brian1's truck Jon..^^^^^This will get you there...and that is cheap...;)

The first step is admitting you have a problem....................

"Hi, my name is Jon, and I'm an addict, I only tried it once, but it was soooo good I have to do it again, can anyone help me?"

"I know it's cheaper than the other rushes I have tried, but I'm afraid that my family is now involved and that we may all be in jepordy, can anyone help me?"

"Forgive me asphault for I have sinned, outside the lines and into the terra firma, covent my sin as I no not what I have done, but that I know I have strayed from the path of the right, for a path of the righteous, peer pressure I have fallen to, blessed father please forgive me for the errors of my ways, and grant me the serinity of solid axles and terra low gears, AMEN!"

Straight up Jon, your screwed sir!

Jeff - :navajo:

Mine is cheaper and it's solid :)

Have I ever told you I like the way you think?

Jon you are hooked, go for it and have fun. You have an engine that could do fine with a little tamer cam and lower rpm range. The intake and heads are still good for lower power in a 347. If you chose to swap the TC, you could gain a lot with a custom cam matched to your parts. Don't go with my cam guy, he really likes to make the billet cams($100 more than regrind). Tough choices, let Sheri decide. LOL,

OK hear me out minute please-
I noticed, that while climbing, if I could get the transmission onto 3rd gear (while in low) the torque converter would lock, if I could maintain that speed. Now, this usually meant going too fast-
However-

I wonder if there is a way -thru the PCM, to force the torque converter to lock in 1st and 2nd gear?

Maybe even have a steering wheel switch. If I could get it locked in the lower 2 gears I know this would help. it runs cool when locked

I noticed, Once the converter would lock, the temp would fall like a rock. I mean, it would cool within a minute tops-if- I could keep it locked by feathering the throttle.

Evan also recommended a nuetral "shift switch " on the wheel to shift to neutral when I feel "pushed"

to me, these seem like a couple things to try, as it might be relatively inexpensive to incorporate them

Jon is............................

Welcome to the darkside Jon :p: it has begun!

His next question will be, what's the biggest tire he can get under his truck with shackle's and TT without trimming.

Jon, in my opinion, wheeling is ALL about inertia management. Anything you can do to improve that is a step in the right direction.

The more I think about this, the more I think I might be on to something--

if I can keep the stall speed for obstacles-this will imitate a "clutch slip" which just might save a cv axle-, by allowing a smoother power transition-like going up a small ledge, or hump ( 12-18")

then, when I need full lock ( like full clutch) I could flip a switch and climb in 1st or 2nd,locked up running cool as a cucumber. I could add an electric trans cooler fan, plus a larger 2nd cooler.

No feedback?

I dunno exactly about your trans, but on the E4ODs, locking the torque converter clutch is done by closing the circuit on one wire (exactly as you stated, flipping a switch). Some Full Size Broncos owners do this on their off road vehicles. I'm assuming it's probably the same way for the 4r70w - just gotta find the right wire ;)

On another note, why not just sell that high stall converter and go with a lower one?

because I think the cam lope would push through the brakes. It idles at 875-900 rpm's--
I'd have to loose the cam also--and, the power-
it would cause a chain reaction of re tuning issues. I would need to resize fuel injectors,

the same chain reaction of parts needed to support this camshaft, but in reverse-

Gotcha gotcha -- looks like the hunt for the lockup wire begins! :)
