Come here you, and gimme a hug--:D

that's the ticket. it will keep me busy--

I can test this, as it builds heat in 2nd gear on a level surface--
if I can get it to lock, and cool at the same speed, I think it may help quite a bit-

thanks IZ--

Did everyone hear that? JT is giving away free hugs!!! FREE HUGS!!! YEEY! :)

You are trying to balance the low gearing of the 1/2 gears and the transfer case low against lock up. The lock up bypasses the TC torque multiplication, so if it can lock in 1/2 than you may lose more torque than is worth it to do that. I'm comparing the ideal low stall converter to what you have. You are brainstorming about something that could fall in the middle there. Would that be enough?

R&Ring the TC is what you are avoiding, that's a lot of work. That and a new cam choice, which would cost more than a used TC. At least this thread costs nothing, yet.

What does the other side of that sign say, LOL.

Now that you got bit by the bug, I think I'll repost this link to whet your appetite.

I did that on 285/75r16s, a 2" body lift, and Powertrax rear locker. Nothing fancy by today's standards.

But I'll remember and treasure that trip until the day I die.

I also have a treasure from that trip, seems to me the wheels in the picture below haven't quite got the rash on them..................YET! :p:

Oh but they got gashed and rashed alright ;) I look at them everyday.

You should have seen the BFG's I took off the front wheels

Jeff - :navajo:

Wow Jeff..... you've still got those wheels? I thought they were history by now :)

....and the tire tread wear was perfectly aligned the last I saw them ;)

All I know is that my chopped top B2 with all it's visibility and So short a turning radius is so much more fun to drive then my X on the same trails. Just need a locker next, then of course the next and next and next thing.
Good luck on your decision :salute:

Might oneday build a hardcore rig that won't be used as a DD. No tags, no Insurance, not having to worry about getting banged up. Xo cage comes to mind real quick.

Love to come out west and do those trails.

Some time back I tried to read everything I could on convertor stall speed and matching that to engine power, gearing ratios, tire size etc..... at the end of the day I was more confused than when I started.

In fact the issue is SOOO complex I decided that stock stall with VERY minor variations would be about all I would ever consider. FORD has engineers who figure all this out.

High stall speed is a siren call, but not always a good idea.

In an otherwise healthy automatic transmission, the biggest heat producer is an unlocked torque convertor. That's why in really cold weather you will notice your TC has not started locking as soon as it usually does - it is a design to used it to heat the fluid!

Me? I'd ditch the High stall convertor...

Come get my 93 Explorer with Early Bronco Solid Axle up front, new 35" tires, New wheels, 8.8 with Disc swapped in, convertible from windshield back (needs new canvas), on board air, caged, leather, wood trim, tranny guage.
Selling for 1200.00 as it has a blown head gasket. A motor can be had for 400.00 and swapped in.
Come get it, it was daily driven for the last two years.

Just something to consider Jon. ;) You could pick up this truck from Brian, bring it to Bastrop where I know this guy who has experience in swapping motors in Explorers (you can ask Froader, Kris, Mudd*****). Maybe if you planned this right, you can come, say.....around the weekend of Oct. 25th for the Halloween Party ;), maybe go wheeling after the swap, have an informal EF Mod meeting since Kris, Michael, SVO, Blee (if he can get away from his girlfriend and her needles or better yet, bring her along so we can watch her poke him with needles :p:) and any other folks who may show up along with other EF/Demon 4x4 members.

Ahhh, what a great time that would be. :D

He still has them on the Nasty Hoe. Just need the drivetrain installed in the truck and maybe they will see dirt again. :p:;)

That's it. That was the one thing that put me over the edge-
I gotta sell the Mounty and make this happen. :D

Back in the old days we had a 12 step group for those who got bit by the bug. Group, I think it's time to restart the meetings. I'll help Jon feel welcome.

Hi, I'm Gerald and I'm an Explorerholic.

Looky here..... I found our 12 steps. Wow, it's a year 2000 post.

http://explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?p=62160&highlight=steps#post62160

THE TWELVE STEPS

1) We admitted we were powerless over our Explorers - that our lives had become unmanageable.
2) Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.
3) Made a decision to turn our Explorers and our lives over to the care of God as we understood him.
4) Made a searching and fearless equipment inventory of our Explorers.
5)Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of the modifications still needed.
6) Were entirely ready to remove all these defects of design and modify our rigs.
7) Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings in wrenching.
8) Made a list of all persons we had ignored while working on our Explorers, and became willing to make amends to them all.
9) Made direct amends to such non-gearheads whenever possible, except when to do so would insult them or result in their disallowing further modifications to the vehicle.
10) Continued to take inventory and when we were short a modification, promptly admitted it.
11) Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for our Explorers and the power to afford to carry that out.
12) Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to other Explorer owners, and to practice these principles in all of our affairs.
