Hello all,

I'm hunting down an intermittent high idle problem with my 98 XLT 4.0 SOHC. I think I'm on the right track, but a little good advice might prevent me from buying parts that don't need replacing!

The problem hasn't shown up in quite a few months. Recently the weather here in Holland has been very foggy and between 0 en 8 degrees celsius. And boom! There it was again.

When I'm driving all is well. I love my car :-) When I decide to coast and the vehicle speed is dropping it almost seems like the RPM's don't drop fast enough.

When I'm about to come to a full stop the idle does not drop below about 900 to 1000 and sometimes not below 750. At that point I also hear a soft clung. I think that's the gearbox shifting down to first, but with the RPM's being to high I think it isn't too happy with it. Normally I don't hear this sound coming from my transmission.

After driving on for a while most of the times the problem goes away. I cleaned the IACV a few months ago and the problem stayed away for some time.

Recently I changed the TPS sensor and the IACV-gasket. I have no DTC's (I check this myself with my laptop). The absolute throttle position is 20%.

Now here's the thing:

When the idle was high in D as well as in P I decided to unplug the electrical connector to the IACV. That is with the engine running. The RPM's dropped to about 350-400. When I plugged it back in again the idle was perfect (650-700 RPM in P). I repeated this a few times more that day when the problem occured again and it worked every time.

My question:

Should I throw a new IACV at this problem? My last IACV dates back some two years and about 45.000 km (25000 miles I think). Could it be that the IACV sticks open a bit now and then?

Any input is greatly appreciated!

Kind regards,

Hans

This being said, I'm going to clean the IACV tonight and I'll do the same for the throttle plate.

Or just to rule out causes: I'll clean the IACV first and monitor the issue. If this doesn't solve it, I'll clean the throttle plate housing.

Never a dull moment :-)

I got some carb cleaner and thoroughly cleaned the throttle body. A lot of black goo came out. Always nice.

My neighbour told me he had a similar problem. His idle became irredic after he changed his stock air filter for a K&N filter. After he changed it back the issue was solved. Has anyone experienced this too?

So I also changed back to my standard air filter.

First testdrive was ok. Let's wait and see...

Aarrggghhh!

I testdrove the car for a while and had the issue again. I decided to replace the IACV. Everything seemed to be okay.

This morning when decelerating from 65 mph to zero at a traffic light the RPM again didn't drop fast enough and hung at about 750 in 'D'. This is annoying, because the car tends to vibrate a bit in oppose to idling at about 500 in 'D'.

I must say that I changed the IACV this saturday and had the battery disconnected for a while. I hadn't driven much saturday and sunday so it's still in 'learning mode' I believe.

As to the weather conditions: it was about 5 degrees celsius and quite damp.

Do any of you think this issue might be related to the throttle plate maybe being warped or something? Or that these weather conditions tend to make it 'hang'. Closed throttle is about 19% with the engine not running by the way, so that seems to be alright. There are no DTC.

Just for reference and to rule out causes I got hold of a very reasonably priced and tested second hand throttle body. It's being shipped to me this week.

Am I missing something? The idle itself is solid. Any other possible causes?

The work done so far:

- replaced TPS
- replaced IACV
- cleaned MAF, IAT-sensor and the rest of the air intake with intakecleaner
- (non related) had an oil change (10W40) recently
- second hand throttle body is on its way..

I'm grasping at straws here!
