Got a 2012 Explorer with the 3.5L.

It gives the 3 codes, P0300, P0302, P0306 which are all random misfire codes. These are CEL flashing codes under load and after a few times it stays on. I am only driving the car when testing.

It does have a small erratic idle. The tach is just moving around like 50 to RPMS.

Swapped coil packs around, still 2 and 6. Swapped injectors around, still 2 and 6. New plugs of course.

Installed new timing chain and it is timed correctly. Have tore it down 3 times to check and redo the timing marks with the colors on the chain. All good.

Compression check all cylinders @ 125 pounds. Car has 230K on it

Don't see any place to check fuel pressure.

Torque pro shows random misfires on 2 and 6 but I don't know how to check if its a coil breaking down or a injector volts.

Any one got a manual on this car for troubleshooting DTCS? Ford repair manual etc etc!

You can check the fuel rail pressure with torque pro. I believe if you make a vehicle profile and it has the word Ford in it, torque will offer to import all the Ford PIDs and that's one of them.

230k miles is impressive. You mentioned its been apart many times... were there any other codes prior to this?

Hello. Did you ever fix the problem you were having. I’m am having the exact same symptoms on my 2011 Ford Explorer xlt. I have replaced the pcm, all the spark plug, coils, and purge valve. I also pulled all of the fuel injectors out cleaned and swapped them around . I’m still having the same problem.

Welcome to the Forum Tom.
That was the member's one and only post and there was no reply to a PM I sent at the time. Hopefully, he/she is still following the thread.

It seems everyone is waiting on the other to have this fixed. Have you taken it to the dealer to have it checked out?

No I haven’t. I wanted to try one more thing before I take it to the dealer.

not sure if 5th gens have, 99% sure, but at least in 2nd gens the ECT could cause a misfire

I’m starting to wonder if it’s an issue with the fuel tank evap. When the cars gas light comes the problem goes away and I can’t get it to do it anymore. After I fill the tank all of the problems come back. So the next thing I’m going to try is to drop the tank and inspect it before I take it into the dealer. Oh and the vehicle has a remanufactured engine that was put in less then a year ago. It has about 15k miles on it

could be that too! whats fuel pressure like?

The fuel pressure holds at 50 even when it starts acting up but I notice it was weird when I disconnected the fuel line fuel did not spray out. It was like there is no pressure behind it.

is there an obstruction in the line? where is the 50
psi taken?

I don’t think so. The pressure was taken on the line right before the fuel rail. Another thing we noticed is when it does start acting up the timing drops to nothing on the scanner and after the light goes off and the car starts running fine the timing comes back to normal. All of the problems only happen between 40-60 mph when you smash down on the pedal.

90% of the time imo misfiring under load is a fueling or ignition issue... plugs wires coil all new? how bout injectors? and whats the condition of the fuel pump pressure relief vakve (for lack of a better word)

I replaced all of the plugs and coils. I pulled all of the injectors out cleaned and swapped them around. Still giving me cylinders 2 and 6 misfire. As far as I know it has the original fuel pump in it. I was also thinking about replacing that seeing that it has the built in fuel filter.

dont know what its called hut if fuel pressure drops could be the drainback valve thing... but not too sure! orher than that im out of ideas for now!

I don’t think that vehicle has that but I also did replace the purge valve. Thanks for the help.

I had the same engine codes P0302 and P0306 on my 2012 Explorer with 115,000 miles. I took it to the dealership, they did diagnostic tests, performed a tune up (replaced the spark plugs), codes went away. Explorer drives better and has smooth acceleration at higher RPMs.
