Interesting observation: My parking brake wasn't working that well.
So I pull the rotor. Everything inside looks perfect, no problem. Was done kinda recently, I don't even drive it much, but I use the parking brake.
Then I take tension off the cables.
Nothing is binding. Both cables are pretty free.
Then I start playing with the latch mechanism. Seems the driver side does not have much up down movement. But the passenger does.
The passenger side does not seem to return to the same position as the driver when activated (but nothing is really binding with the mechanism or cable when pushed with a screwdriver, and it snaps back). Obviously the the pedal loads this much more.
I pull it apart. Seems the driver side has a "shelf" on the backing plate that supports the mechanism, but the one on the passenger side has flex! It does not support the assembly. So, when activated, things "may" slip out of place. (I think?)

The lever is free to slide down the parking shoe surface - read on...

Then I took a look at rockauto. Seems there are two styles of parking shoes. 1996 FORD EXPLORER 4.0L V6 Parking Brake Shoe | RockAuto

The Ford OEM seems to be a 745 style. (BRP-745)
There is a "701" and "745"
745: (note the extra tang - it is upside down in the pic). That would certainly support the latch. The 745 is also listed as Jeep Liberty Compatible.

701: Allows the mechanism to move out of alignment (maybe it is designed for a backing plate with a tang)

I may actually try the 745 setup. My F150 has the exact same setup, just larger. Both shoes are notched like the 745.

Will be interested to see how this works out!

They should be coming soon. I also noticed that on other cars the hardware is much simpler to install (different upper spring). Crown Vics also use these shoes. On some the (1) return spring attaches into the round holes, not the wide V groove.

Mechanism looks pretty trashed. I can lube it up, install those 745 shoes, $18 into it, definitely has a nice cutout for the actuator, maybe it will work but it looks like some metal may be worn away by the top slider. These shoes supposedly have a very high grip too, guess it is for older assemblies (Raybestos PG). Hard to tell if there is contact there and it binds, or if it just like that, may check the other side tomorrow.

They also do have the entire assembly.

Not a bad price but you have to pull the axle...I have a feeling that won't last too long in the salt. But neither will this truck 🤣🤣. Probably would go for both because the passenger side needs a washer for one of the spring pins (hole rotted).
