I have a 1998 Explorer Sport 4.0 OHV. The engine pings when I first start the truck up, but only pings while idle. It also pings when I restart the truck, but does not have any problems while driving.
I have put in a new MAF, IAC valve, spark plugs/wires, fuel-filter, so I am stuck.
I read in another thread that I should tighten the lower intake manifold bolts, but just wondering if anybody knows of a solution

Without having heard the noise, it's hard to say. I would venture a guess that you are hearing lifter tick, and not ping. Depending on what oil filter you are using, some of them have a bad drainback valve and the truck will tick when first started up because the top end of the engine doesn't have much oil in it. I suggest you search the site for "oil filter AND tick" etc. etc.

It's probably the wrist pins. Very common noise in the 98-99 OHV engines. Sounds like marbles in a tin can. No Fix. Mines done it since day one. Now have 127K and no problems w/engine (knock on wood).
