My explorer has a strange rattle coming from it at idle when the AC is on. it sounds like loose metal rattling. It stops when I accelerate, or when I turn the AC off. Any ideas here?

Thanks!

Jay

Is the A/C working? That sounds like what mine did when I was low on A/C coolant. The noise was the clutch in the A/C compressor shutting itself off because there wasn't enough pressure in the system.

Yes

The AC is working fine I suppose, haven't had any cooling problems. I have noticed the sound is getting louder each day, or maybe it seems that way because I'm getting agrivated with it more and more each day. When you added more coolant, did the vibration noise completely stop? How much did it cost you to have it checked, refilled, etc..?

What causes a coolent loss anyway?

I don't know what causes a coolant loss, my a/c was working one day and not the next. I got a product called "Measure and Charge" by interdynamics at Advance Auto for $20. It comes with a built in pressure gauge so you don't overfill it and blow up the system. Its very easy to do, not worth paying somebody else. And yes, the noise stopped when I did that.
