Pinging - Octane Shorting Bar

Anyone have experience fixing a pinging 4.0L by removing the Octane Shorting Bar. It's a small 1" square gray plastic module on a connector found taped to a wire bindle between the air cleaner box and the passenger side firewall.
Removing it is supposed to retard timing 2-3 degrees or so and fix pinging problems.
I've seen reference to it on another web site (or maybe an earlier version of this one (Ford Explorers Owners?)

Any one know about this?

(I just removed mine)

Yes you could do this if you want to lose performance. IMO doing that is not a good way to fix pinging. If you search this site there are many things you can do to make the pinging go away.
