Hello,

I saw that a pack rat had been nesting under the hood (03 Mounty, 4.0L). There was some torn up plastic and foam under the plenum that I didn't remember seeing in the past. When I removed it, it seemed purposeful and nice (if the rat put it there, he's got talent). I don't remember throwing anything like that away (critters sometimes tip the trash cans and sometimes I don't know it till the morning). If that plastic/foam thing was there from the factory, is it necessary?

See the following pics (my apologies that they suck):

In the second pic, the perspective is from the front of the car looking towards the ****pit. Specifically look for the foam and shiny plastic (under the plenum) since they're kinda hard to see.

Thank you for any insight you might have.

that's the foam insulator for noise/heat attached to the intake manifold. The stock intake manifold has those and they usually fall into pieces over time, the replacement dorman intake manifold doesn't have that installed. It's an optional item, so throwing it away wouldn't cause problems.

all that it ever accomplished on my 02 ex was to act as a sponge for leaking fluids.

Thank you gents.

Swshawaii, mahalo. I'd have never found that thread given its title.
