I took my car to a little shop by my house. Im getting my engine removed, remanufactured, and re-installed for around $2200. Dead Link Removed Im also having the guys at the shop port and polish my heads, and extrude hone my intake. Does anyone have any expierence with the "little hole in the wall" auto places? How will i know if they did a good job or even did it? Is this a good price for all this? The owner of the shop seems to know what hes talking about and is Very proud of his race car. Dead Link Removed Any expierence you guys have on this subject would be great.

Firs of all, I am sorry if this reply sounds harsh, but I see this situation almost weekly. I totally sympathasize with your desire to do business with the home folks "by my house" instead of some huge faceless business.

Unfortunately, your question is unanswerable. No generalizations are possible about "little hole in the wall shops"--some are excellent and some suck. Depends entirely on WHICH "little shop" you are asking about. Only someone who has used the shop you are referring to will have any "experience" to help you. You should have done the research BEFORE putting your engine in the hands of the "little shop." Ask the hard questions first to avoid problems later.

Tony,

A couple of places you can check besides other customers are the Better Business Bereau and AAA. The BBB will know if there are any major complaints out there, and AAA approval is a good sign. No business is perfect, so if there are one or two problems that the BBB has been contacted about over the last few years, that doesn't mean the shop isn't any good. Several complaints means avoid the place.
