are capable of 12 and 11sec 1/4 mile stock with top speeds from 180 to well over 200mph stock . By your definition if three of those cars were parked side by side in a parking lot in an area with no race track they should be confiscated and crushed.

Modifications like that just are not necessary in a street car and, if you want to race that badly, there are LEGAL ways to do it without endangering other people's lives! Got it!? Oh! The cars you speak of come that way STOCK! There are no modifications to those. If you modify a street car it can only mean one thing... you intend to RACE it somewhere and, most likely, on the streets! If not, then you are racing it legally and it remains parked when you're not.

Are you talking about nitrous oxide? Nitro methane is a totally different fuel and I highly doubt anyone is running it in a street car. And just because nitrous is installed on a car doesn't mean they're street racers, most of the time the nitrous system is closed, and then only used at the track.

I have been racing on a dragstrip since I was 17, I am 45, I have never particpated in any form of illegal drag racing yet I have driven many a highly modified car to work and car shows every day.
(examples www.hotrodlincoln.org and www.hotrodholden.org ) By your defintion I am a criminal. If I want to drive my highly modified 11 sec car everywhere I go thats my right as an American citizen as is carrying my handgun to blow away any idiot that tried to take that car from me. Doesnt mean I will be racing or shooting when I feel like it,only when it is correct, its called taking control of your own actions and not letting the goverment do it for you.

Just because it's modified doesn't mean the owner would EVER use it for racing on the street. Why can't car be modified to the same level of performance as a new vette without the owner becoming a criminal?

Yeah.... maybe in Kansas it is but we're not talking about Kansas, are we!? They've caught many street racers out here running nitrous ILLEGALLY! Why do you think they've made these laws? These guys don't want to PAY to race legally but they don't mind paying the fines for racing illegally! They put themselves and everyone around them in danger when they race down residential streets! Most of the time, it's the innocent bystanders who get caught in the middle of it!

Yes, you are right. I meant nitrous and, if a vehicle has that modification for LEGAL racing, then that is an exception. However, as I stated above, there have been MANY illegal street racers caught using "nitrous" fuel injection and that is what was used when my friend was killed. The kid had the modification and USED it on a residential street. Of course, his car was totalled and put out of use but... who knows how many others there are out there who use it and aren't caught??

While I love you guys to pieces, there are points I agree with and points I disagree with here. Any vehicle that is suped up beyond the point of necessity WITHOUT having confirmation of a LEGAL racing record, is, IMHO, modified strictly for street racing. If you have nitrous capabilities, you BEST be able to prove you use it at a LEGAL racing venue (I have friends who do this and I KNOW they keep their records with them at all times when driving their cars on the streets)! Otherwise, you don't NEED it!

Yes, I drive a Camry and it IS capable of going over 120 mph but I have NEVER done it nor would I EVER do it on a residential street (and it came that way STOCK)!

Im sorry your friend got killed by an idiot but they could have been killed by a drunk, a road rager , a normal speeder , etc. The car had nothing to do with the crash just the moron driving. He could have just as well been some rich kid with a STOCK new Vette that killed them because he was speeding, then what? ban all fast cars? What if it was a soccer mom in a 7000lb Excursion at only 70mph? they would still be dead.. Then what? Ban SUVs that go faster than 50 or weigh more than 5000lbs?

not everyone like to have a "stock" car, a lot of people, me included like modifying our cars to be different, built to suit our taste and driving style. With my modified mountaineer I can beat mustangs and camaro's at the race track and still haul around 5 people comfortably, or carry a bunch of stuff in the back, and even pull a trailer none of which I could do in a sports car. It's the best of both worlds to me.

Funny you should say that! Rick is griping about Arizona laws (and it being a "Republican" state) but here in California, it's been a Democrat state for quite a while. We had a much better time of it when Reagan was governor and we had a Republican state.

By the way, it WAS a rich kid who had suped up his car and made all those wonderful modifications, just like the rest of the street racers. He also had a Corvette and other vehicles at home that he didn't use to street race. They were just for show. Imagine what his parents would have said if he wrapped one of those around a telephone pole!
