I just bought my 98 explorer xlt 4.0 sohc. When i first start it and give it more than half throttle, the truck shakes really bad. It usually only does it right after i start it, even if the engine is cold or warm. When i bought it, the guy told me that the starter gear does not disengage all the way and it drags on the flexplate, does that sound like it could cause the shake? What can I do about it? Thanks for any replies.

If the starter does not disengage, you will hear it - loudly - no matter what throttle position. Ever turn the key to start up when the engine is already running? That is what you would hear all the time. Seller BS'd you I think. Check your fluid level in the transfer case and the transmission.

but why would it only do it the first time i step on the gas after start up? Is there any other reason that would happen? It doesnt matter if the motor is cold or warm, it just happens right after i start it. I know what an engaged starter sounds like, but if its dragging and not all the way disengaged, then it seems possible. thanks for the reply.

Sounds more like just a rough idle. If it hasnt had a tuneup, that could help, My 98 does something similar, when i start it in the morning when the motor is cold, it does that as well, might just be the IAC motor. I will probably clean that sooner or later. I did the tuneup, plugs and wires, that helped for a while, but the shake seems to be back.

yeah but this problem only happens just after start up, regardless of engine temp, and it only happens once, it has never happened more than once or twice. But if i shut it off, and turn it back on, it will do it once, then stop.
