Falken and a few others make a 75 series 17" tire that I'm considering buying. My wife drives a '07 EB Explorer and I want to fill up some of the massive fender gap that the car has. I've seen some say 265-70-17 will fit and when I compare them to the 245-75-17, the 75 series tire still appears to be a slight bit smaller.

How akward do 265's or 245-75's look on an Explorer with stock suspension? Are there any computer recalibration issues I'll run into if I go larger than stock?

Thanks,
Todd

they would rub when turning, I have 245/75 r16 with -6 offset rims, and i could go up to 265's with a little trimming. but you may be able to trim enough so it doesn't rub. your speedo will read slower too.

I had 245/70 Goodyear Duratracs on my ex 03 EX.

Looked awesome.

When I made a turn with the stering weel at dead-end, they rubbed a bit to the inside cover of the wheel arc. But nothing to be bothered about.

Going with the larger tire, the gear ratio will suck...
I guess the 07 has 3.55 ratio, same as mine (06).
By moving up to 265/70 not the looks will suffer, but the performance and gas mileage.

Some may not feel it, some may not be bothered, but the wheel diameter has just increased by some 2-3 inches. Now the torque at the end of the axle has to be larger to give the vehicle acceleration as before. It means - more stress on the trany, on the joints, gears bearings etc... As if you were constantly towing something...
On the other hand - on highway driving (flat driving, constant speed, no accelerations etc) - the gas mileage will be better, as per the same engine rpm the vehicle will cover more distance.
THe larger tire affects acceleration.

If you go through the formu, you'll find that most who have gone up to 265/70 have also re-geared.
No re-tunes or whatsoever would help... Only re-gearing, to get same acceleration (performance) as before.

Check out the following links for mathematical ant theoretical proof of my words. Practical proof can be found in the forum (see Electricians posts):
http://www.offroaders.com/tech/gear-ratio-chart.htm
http://www.offroaders.com/info/tech-corner/reading/mph-rpm.htm

There are useful formulas.

From my experience - 245/70 or 75 would look good, and minimally affect any performance whatsoever.

Here a pic how an 06 ex looks with 265/70 and Truxx lift kit.
(not mine -from truxx homepage, and one of the members here).

If you do want to get up to 265/70, then according to the forum members - put in a lift kit (truxxx or some other) and you'll fit the 265/70 on. Additionally - if there is some rubbing, a wheel spacer (1" or less) would remove the issue.

a friend of mine has installed 265/70R17 on stock suspension and they rub horribly with the inner fender, right above the tire when flexing in off-road driving.

here is LUCHTECH Ex with 265/75/16 with stock suspension

note that 245/75R17 is also 31.46" diameter as will as 265/70R17 and with them you need to re-gear as Peteris mentioned above.

it is better for you to install 245/70R17 or 265/65R17 as they 30.6" diameter.
