2003 Ford Explorer XLT V8. How can you tell if you have a problem with the torque converter? I've had noise for some time that increases with pitch when I accelerate. When I let off the gas, the noise disappears. Dealer told me once a few years ago it was probably the torque converter, but my after market warranty would not cover it; a rather expensive repair. The noise seems to be getting worse now, but doesn't occur all the time; mainly after I have been driving awhile. Any help would be appreciated.

Is the noise at all discernible when revving up the engine in either Neutral or Park? If not, and the fact that it seems to come and go, suggests gear noise rather than torque converter. "Gear" as in axle gears. imp
