Long time no post. I have a new problem and I have never worked on the power steering and know nothing about it, but I guess it is time to learn. I do see the fluid level drop and I get a shrudder when turning. I just found a drip on the front passenger side. Can someone give me a brief on how it works and how to attack my problem.

thanks

I used Lucas Power Steering Leak Stop in my Jeep Wrangler and it worked incredibly well!

Lucas worked well for my car too. Back to the OP, need to trace the leak. Power Steering leak can be from the pump, the hoses, or the Rack & Pinion itself. As I recall the pump and hoses are the drivers side. Can you be more specific to the source of the leak? Is it coming from power steering hoses, pump, or from the R&P itself? Seals can go bad on either the pump or the R&P. If seals on R&P then will need to replace the R&P. Without more info it's hard to speculate. Here's a couple of good links on R&P. http://www.youtube.com/user/robinsonsauto Has a 2 part video which was very helpful for R&P replacement and check out http://www.aa1car.com/library/2003/bf20340.htm for more links on PS & R&P.

+1 on the lucas power steering fix, my lincoln ls and mountaineer's steering gear (rack and pinion) were leaking and a bottle for those fixed the leak. Only problem is that it's temporary. Mine lasted over a year and it's groaning on turns. Ordered the steering gear assembly from detroit axle, been working like new.

What was the price? I have 98 Toyota with leaking R&P. A lot of people on the Toyota Forums like Rack Doctor. http://www.rackdoctor.net/

both my rack and pinion are priced at $110 each, free shipping, no tax and lifetime warranty (with the return of the core - also free shipping provided) The rack has the inner tie rod assembled. Quality control is so so-so on the product (paint job is bad and some missing clamps on the boot) and I haven't got any issues with it. Overall happy with the purchase.

I tried the rack first on my lincoln ls and then bought the 2nd one for my mountaineer after finding out that it's ok.
