I have a 2004 Ford Ranger 4X4 3.0 with 52K. The power steering pump has been changed at dealer and still continues to whine! It seems to be getting louder! I took it back to dealer and they flushed the system after new pump was installed. It will return to dealer on Monday again! I have changed to belt, idler pulley, and belt tensioner myself a few weeks ago, and Dealer verified pump was very loud so they changed it for $300, ouch! Could it possibly be the bearings on the A/C clutch? Dealer says no. I can't live with this whining noise much longer. Maybe a brand new pump might work, any good companies that make top of the line power steering pumps? Any thoughts you may have to help me would be a great help! Thanks, Mark..........:us: Veteran US ARMY

Had the same issue. A friend told me before I change anything to bring the revs up a little and cycle the steering fully from right to left (lock to lock)10 times or so, drive it normal for a few minutes and cycle the steering again. I saw a little improvement each time I did this and after a few times the pump noise was decreased dramatically.
He explained is that sometimes air builds up in the rack and this is the only way to help get it out. Even a flush may not remove the air.
Give it a shot you have nothing to loose.

Just a question Chris, Did you jack up the front wheels off the ground to allow the steering to move more freely, and also do you need to remove the cap off the reservoir? Thanks, Mark...

We finally got the AGR pumps to quiet down and work properly.

Not suggesting you go straight for the AGR but make sure you have enough fluid in the reservoir.

You could try my first test, adding hose to the uncut neck to see if it makes any difference.

Ford pumps always whine...

You could try adding some Lucas Oil power steering stop leak - I've heard it quiets down the whine.

Power Steering Noise/Problem Update

Update on my 04 Ford Ranger 4X4. This problem continues to grow! I took it back to dealer and they agreed the problem was not resolved with changing power steering pump, and bleeding system. They called Ford and they recommended changing out the steering rack at this time, so I reluctantly agreed to the repair. I have an aftermarket warranty where I pay the first $100 and they pay the balance. Here is the kicker, the noise, whining seems to be louder than before! I immediately informed service writer that this is unacceptable and that the truck will not leave the lot. They said that they may need to get Ford Technical guy to look at this to see what problem he may come up with. The bill was over $640 for the rack replacement and no fix! Any suggestions to tell Ford or any idea what may be the issue? Thanks!:us: US ARMY VETERAN
