Can anyone comment on the brand A1 Cardone vs. and Atsco power steering pump? Mine has been whining for some time and I think I am going to replace, but not sure which reman is going to be a better buy.

Thank you all!

I forget which one I purchased of the two, the cheapest one i am sure of that much. The biggest thing that will dictate it's success is how you install it, particularly how you bleed it. If you don't bleed it good enough you will have the same thing you took off. The ford ps pumps are notorious for this.

I dont think bleeding is an issue - all you do is turn the steering wheel from lock-to-lock a few times. Power steering systems are continuously circulating its fluid in a loop so, unlike the brake system, bleeding happens eventually as the system is put through its paces.

You don't think or you know? If he slaps this thing on and turns it lock to lock on the ground or by driving around in circles then he can easily have the same thing. I have had to fix stuff done the above way. Ford even goes so far as to having you put a vacuum on the system to help get rid of the air bubbles. I would have the front end off the ground at a minimum when bleeding it by turning it slowly side to side at short intervals. Start it, turn it a few seconds then cut it off for a few minutes, repeat.
But this is the best

I went through this exercise about a year ago and based on my research they ALL whine. It's real hit and miss whether you'll get a quiet pump or not. I was lucky to deal with a shop that got me a pump with the condition if it was noisy, or it didn't solve the noise problem I had, they'd take it off, no charge (including labour to install it in the first place).

Needless to say, I didn't have to pay anything. My noise was coming from a faulty pulley (not pump related).

Okay scratch that - "I know".

I was really leaning towards the Cardone, as when I looked on line at the websites, it seemed they were a bit more thorough in the reman. Atsco, stated things were inspected and changed "if necessary" kinda seems to defeat the purpose. Does anyone think that rebuilding the pump I have is a better option?

The other thing is I saw that some people seem to think companies just throw on some paint and say it is reman...where the Atsco seemed to not be painted and didn't "hide" anything.

Any ideas?

I think however I might first try to clean mine up and get new hoses and seals...flush and fill with synthetic fluid and vacuum bleed. Maybe it is just air bound...because the noise seems to be louder upon start up and no loss of steering function, however there is a leak and I have had to replace fluid.

Does anyone think that is a good first step?

Sorry to hi jack the post. what was wrong with the pulley? My 96 X whines when I make the slighest move on the steering wheel It has a light whine which becomes a strained whine when I move the steering. I would like to fix it if i can.
