IS changing the power steering pump on a 92 explorer (4x4) a serious task? Any ideas on how many hours it takes? I'm relatively competent on doing the job, but am short on time these days. Wondering if i should just take it in.

Thanks

I am not sure about the time involved. I would just add that all I have heard about Ford ps pumps is that the pumps can be noisy if air gets into the system when you are installing. I assume there is some bleeding process involved but I am not sure. The same source of info also questioned whether or not they could put a GM Saginaw ps pump into their Explorer, since they claimed the Saginaw pump was better than the Ford pump. I don't know...

Consult a Haynes or Chilton's manual and also look for relevant info on this site:

Your looking at 2-3 hours of time. The easiest way to get the pump out is to unbolt the ac comp. from the brackets and remove the entire bracket and pump assembly. Use a rachet strap to gently pull up the ac comp. The hardest part of course is the pulley but a local auto parts store should be able to rent it to you. LOL

my ps pump is super leaky, I'm looking for an aftermarket ps pump
any suggestions, its a 92-X

AGR makes a factory replacement, or should I say remanufactured pump. I believe it was about $135. for the pump through 4WPW. They don't make a HD pump for it.

Check around..I got mine from a local junk yard..$35 with a 1 year warrenty..

I just replaced my Power Steering pump last weekend. It was not on an Explorer, but a 94 Aerostar 4WD. Same 4.0 as the Explorer. The pump had been whining very loud since I bought the van in November. I had never replaced one before so I was a little hesitant about doing it, but I couldn't stand that noise anymore. It was very easy. You do not have to remove the AC compressor. Unscrew the high presure line, and slide off the return line (very easy) Remove the Pulley after you take the belt off of course (5 minutes to remove the belt) and then remove the 3 bolts holding the pump on. Then the pump just drops right out and came out through the top. If I was able to bring the pump out through the top on this Aerostar you Explorer guys should not have a problem at all! I bought a remanufactured pump at autozone with a lifetime warranty for 60.00 bucks. They let me use there pulley remover and pulley replacer for a 40.00 deposit which I got back later that afternoon. You do have to bleed the air out of the pump before you start the motor. I decided to bleed mine with the front wheels off the ground, which is something I had read about. Anyway the pump came with bleeding instructions. Just do what it says. After I finished I fired it up, and I was totally shocked how quiet it was. When I turn the wheel I can barely here the pump working at all. I can actually here the motor run now, and not that pump!

94 ford,
I wasn't able to get a good bite on the puller with a socket. There just isn't enough room in there on my 91. So thats why I pulled everything out. Once out the impact made short work of the pulley. You must have more room in there than me, the rad. and shroud kept getting in the way.
