2014 Explorer PIU 3.7L
hello đź‘‹
so when searching for mpg and performance increasers, i came across performance ecu chips like this one: Ecu chip link
i am very curious on if these actually work (they have very good reviews so i would think so), but i am concerned about the AWD system and if using this would screw something up with that.
any input or experience with these would be very helpful. Thanks
-Asher
*edit: i got in touch with pedal commander and they said it would have no effect on the AWD system

The factory powertrain (engine/trans/traction) tune on PIUs is already pretty aggressive - in my opinion it's much more responsive and ready to go than the sport mode present on Ford civilian vehicles. While there are various tuning products and services out there which can squeeze out even more performance, IMO the benefits are not worth the costs and potential issues.

You would not get much out of that "Pedal Commander". That unit only allows one to play with one tuning variable, the throttle. You can adjust/tune and take away any delay in the electronic throttle. It is not worth what they ask for it. A chip that has been programmed as a result of tuning for higher octane fuel, timing, shift points, etc. etc. may give you more power, but not a big gain. I would want to have an idea of what was tuned to get more power, proof in a dyno run, and then I would consider the cost for what it would actually get me in terms of power. A small bump in power is hard to feel and could leave you disappointed.

I see many chips available and one I looked at shows 35 horses gained and 5 mpg. It would be worth the price if there was proof of results!

I am wondering what are these "potential issues". I do not believe there are any issues. Why would a tuner put something on the market to screw-up your ride and their business? I would research in detail, as I have and get a reputable tuner/tune. I have tuned and am in the process of adding a tuner and parts to my sport. Here is a real tuner with a custom tune to your vehicle: Unleashed Custom Tuning for Edge 3.5L/3.7L I would get in touch with them and ask what they can do. They are professional and came well recommended.

The issues would be reliability, throwing codes, performance loss, etc

In the aviation world nearly all the engines could have been built to make more power, but running at that level of power reliability starts to go from great to sketchy

With cars some of the lost power if for enviro BS, getting rid of that makes sense

However with the PIU I’d imagine the law enforcers already exempt themselves from those laws so I’d imagine much of the power “left on the table” is to enhance reliability, adding power makes you really slow if you end up on the side of the road

The reason people sell those “tunes” is the same reason people sell anything else, because someone is willing to give them money for it, I noticed they don’t have a phone number and very few reviews, going off their YouTube comments, not sure I’d go that route

“Clearly their support has not gotten any better i had a DCE code and now its married and cant return to stock cause it says no stock code found been on the phone with support twice and still doesn't work. Before they went into my computer remotely my sct was unmarried and had 5 unlocks now married and 0 unlocks and its now a damn paper weight, so dont buy from them if you ever have to rely on support cause youll be screwed”

Lots of YouTube questions are how to return cars to stock, not a good sign

This is a modified forum. In aviation they did not know the maximum performance until they tested and modified for it.

What specific codes and issues are the result of a good aftermarket tune with these? Examples would be great.

You are Assuming the worst of people. There are a bunch of good people who have spent countless hours hacking at ford computers and tuning strategies to be able to tune these.

I call BS! SCT has been around for some time and has a good reputation with tuners and gets good reviews. Anyone can cherry pick and find dissatisfied customers with any product, look further, you have failed with little research. There are many happy customers who got great results.

thanks for getting back to me. Im always impressed on the knowledge that you guys have and willingly share. thanks for the recommendation i will check them out👍

I am working with a reputable tuner currently and will ask if he thinks the 3.5 & 3.7NA, in stock form, are worth tuning.

Going off the comments in their YouTube videos

I think there are some limited things one can do on a PIU for power, but not much outside of full on major swaps with tons of time and money

That SCT company also says they will not mod around all the enviro emissions stuff, which would be one of the areas I could see some gains could be made without sacrifice to reliability and durability.

I think some gains could be had on a retail explorer, but I think the PIUs are about as apex as they can get without major engine swap level mods, and being AWD if you start making much more power you’ll have everything downstream of the crank that will now need attention

On mine I changed out for Michelin tires, upgraded some lights, and made the interior a little more matched to my mission, outside from that it seems big money for small gains, that said it’s a sweet driver
